A state psychiatric hospital has beeen in Medical Lake, Washington, for 130 years, but the town with that name already existed. The town grew on the shores of eponymous lake, whose waters and mud were thought to have curative properties. A belief that still prevailed when the site for the hospital was selected.

The notes on the lines of the treble clef are E, G, B, D, F. The mnemonic used by some music students to remember it (like me) was Every Good Boy Does Fine. Another one was Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. The latter mnemonic was also the title of a 1971 album by the Moody Blues. This album featured the single “The Story in Your Eyes”.

Tom Stoppard once described himself as a “bounced Czech”. He was born Tomáš Straussler in Zlín, Czechoslovakia, a city dominated by the Bata manufacturing company. His parents, both Jewish, worked for Bata; his father, Eugen, was a company doctor. Jan Antonín Baťa, the company’s owner, transferred his Jewish employees to branches of his firm outside Europe. In March 1939, when the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, the Straussler family, including 1 year old Tomáš, fled to Singapore, where Baťa had a factory. All four of Stoppard’s grandparents died in the Holocaust.

In November,-December 1989, the “Velvet Revolution” led to the end of one-party Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, and transition to a liberal democracy. This, in turn, led to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, and the formation of the separate countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993.

Vaclav Havel, a playwright, poet, and political dissident, became the final president of Czechoslovakia in December 1989, and later became the Czech Republic’s first president in 1993.

The Austrian Parliament is composed of two houses: the National Council and the Federal Council. While the Federal Council is referred to as the upper house, it has far less power than the National Council. Although the Federal Council has to approve each law passed by the lower chamber, the latter can overrule most refusals by a simple majority vote.
