In his 1978 animated adaptation of _The Lord of the Rings_ Ralph Bakshi stated his omission of the character Tom Bombadil was because it didn’t move the story along. This sentiment was echoed by Peter Jackson in his adaptation in 2002. ---

In the state of Wisconsin, in any given year, between 15,000 and 20,000 deer-motor vehicle collisions occur. About 1/3 of the collisions occur in the months of October and November, during mating season, when deer are more active; collisions are also more likely to occur during dawn and dusk hours, as deer are crepuscular, and are most active during twilight. Not in play: I did hit a deer once, with my car, in Wisconsin, in 1994. It went against all of the probabilities: it was in the middle of the day, in June. 🙂 ---

Cicero defined a Great Year as the time it took for the Sun, Moon and 5 planets to all return to the same position in the sky. It was believed to be 15,000 years long. ---

William “Boss” Tweed was an American politician most notable for being the political boss of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party’s political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th-century New York City and State. His downfall was preceded by the actions of political cartoonist Thomas Nast; regarding Nast’s cartoons, Tweed reportedly said, “Stop them damned pictures. I don’t care so much what the papers say about me. My constituents don’t know how to read, but they can’t help seeing them damned pictures!” Following his arrest, Tweed escaped prison and fled to Spain, where he worked as a seaman. He was turned over to US authorities after being identified by Nast’s caricatures, returned to jail, and died of pneumonia five months later. ---

The Boss 302 was a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang, originally created to compete in the SCCA’s Trans Am racing series, and marketed to auto buyers in 1969-70. The Boss 302 became a popular Mustang variation among collectors and toy modelers, and the nameplate was revived by Ford for a new Mustang model in 2012-13. ---

Actor Nicolas Cage’s birth name is Nicolas Coppola. He is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, and thus, the first cousin of actor/director Sofia Coppola. In Cage’s first two credited acting roles, he went by Nicolas Coppola. He changed his stage name soon after, to avoid accusations of nepotism, due to connections with his famous uncle and other famous family members. ---

Cage match (or steel cage match) is a match in wrestling. The player must climb at the top and out of the cage in order to win the match. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) currently uses the rule that there are four ways to win: Pinfall, submission, exiting through the door, or climbing over the top and down to the arena floor. For both of the latter, both the wrestler’s feet must be planted firmly on the floor, or the escape doesn’t count. ---
