The National Football League traces its origins to two meetings in 1920, both of which were held at a Hupmobile showroom in Canton, Ohio.

On August 20, 1920, representatives of four Ohio-based pro football teams – the Canton Bulldogs, Dayton Triangles, Akron Pros, and Cleveland Indians – met there, to begin the process of forming a league, in order to raise the profile of professional football, reduce competition for players, and coordinate schedules. At that meeting, the league was dubbed the American Professional Football Conference.

Four weeks later, on September 17, at the same showroom, the four Ohio teams were joined by representatives from six additional teams: the Hammond Pros and Muncie Flyers from Indiana, the Racine (Chicago) Cardinals, Decatur Staleys, and Rock Island Independents from Illinois, and the Rochester Jeffersons from New York. At this meeting, the league’s name was changed to the American Professional Football Association, which formally began play later that fall; they named legendary football player Jim Thorpe as their president (the role which is now titled “commissioner”).

The APFA renamed itself the National Football League in 1922. Of its original teams, only the Racine (Chicago) Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) play in the league today.

The name of my wife’s car is Manfred.

Manfred is a 1963 Porsche 356 cabriolet (convertible). When my wife bought Manfred, the previous owner had already named him.

The Porsche 356 has 3 types of convertibles: cabriolet, roadster, and speedster.

There are subtle differences between the 3. The cabriolet is the most comfortable of the 3 and its folding roof actually protects the occupants from rain — it does not leak. When the top is down you can really tell the difference between the 3 convertibles by looking at the height of the front windshield, especially when the 3 are parked side by side:

Below are 3 web photos:

**cabriolet — silver car** — The cabriolet’s front windshield is the tallest and its color matches the body paint. There is also a chrome trim.

**speedster — blue car** — The speedster’s front windshield is the shortest. It is all chrome.

**roadster — red car** — The roadster’s front windshield is in between. It is also all chrome. Its top corners are more squared off when compared to the other 2.

Here is a picture of my wife’s car. That’s her in it, and we’re parked in front of the Bixby Creek Bridge on the California Big Sur Coast. Manfred is an ivory 356 cabriolet.

While appearing in _The Incredible Hulk_ on TV lead actor Bill Bixby never interacted with his counterpart, Lou Ferrigno, who played The Hulk. According to Bixby, he and Ferrigno made a point of not discussing their parts with each other or watching each other as they were filmed, since this made it more natural for them to act as though unaware of where they are or what their alter ego has done following a transformation.

One episode of _The Incredible Hulk_ was titled “My Favorite Magician” (S3, E5) and featured Ray Walston, Bill Bixby’s co-star from the 1960s sit-com _My Favorite Martian_. The episode title itself was a mash-up of the names of two of Bixby’s earlier TV shows – _My Favorite Martian_ (1963-1966), and _The Magician_ (1973-1974).

Ridley Scott’s 2015 film, _The Martian_ starring Matt Damon was adapted from Andy Weir’s 2011 novel of the same name. External scenes depicting Mars were filmed in Wadi Rum, a UNESCO world heritage site in Jordan near its border with Saudi Arabia and about 35 miles to the east of the city of Aqaba at the north end of the Gulf of Aqaba. Wadi Rum is located within the Sandstone Mountain and Valley Region of southern Jordan and its landscape is characterized by tall, near vertical mountains of iron-rich, erosion resistant, red Umm Ishrin Sandstone.

Frank Herbert’s novel _Dune_ originated as two serialized stories, which were published in _Analog_ magazine. When Herbert reworked and expanded the serials, to create a novel, he struggled to find a publisher which was interested in it. _Dune_ was eventually published by Chilton Books, an imprint which was much better known for its line of auto repair manuals.

Herbert Island, Alaska, is in the Aleutian Islands. It is a circular island roughly 6 miles in diameter and mostly covered by the 4,200-foot Herbert Volcano. The volcano’s 1¼ mile wide caldera is one of the largest in the Aleutian Islands and there have been no recorded eruptions here. The island and volcano were named by the US Navy Hydrographic Office in 1894 for Hilary Abner Herbert who was Secretary of the Navy in the second administration of President Grover Cleveland. The USS Herbert (DD-160) destroyer was also named in his honor.

_Aleutian Islands campaign_ was fought against the Imperial Japanese from June 1942 to 15 August 1943. The IJN captured - briefly- both Attu and Kiska islands- who were of little strategic value. The real enemy was the cold. During the campaign, famed mystery writer Corporal Dashiell Hammett served as the editor producing the daily troop newspaper _The Adakian_.

There is still no historical consensus as to whether the Japanese invasion and capture of some of the Aleutian Islands during World War II was intended to be a precursor to even more aggressive actions against the U.S. West Coast, or if it was meant as a diversionary tactic in the leadup to the early June 1942 Battle of Midway.

It is called that because it mirrored the peaceful Velvet Revolution of 1989 that ended 41 years of communist rule, a peaceful transition of power without violence.

In the 1980s television sitcom _Night Court_, Judge Harry Stone (played by Harry Anderson) was an avid fan of singer Mel Torme, in part because Anderson, himself, was a fan of Torme and his music. As a result of this, Torme appeared in nine episodes of the series, usually playing himself.

Anderson gave the eulogy at Torme’s funeral in 1999.
