In Monopoly, if you roll doubles to go into or get out of jail, you surrender the privilege of an additional roll. But you do get an additional roll if you roll doubles after paying bail or using card to get out of jail before the roll.

The right to make any transaction while in jail is probably a defect in the game, as there is clear advantage to being in jail in the late game play when nearly all properties have been bought and many are improved…

Morton Salt’s trademark of a girl with a numbrella and the phrase “When It Rains, It Pours” refers to the fact that Morton added an ingredient (magnesium carbonate) to their salt to prevent it from caking into solid blocks in humid weather. So on rainy days, thei salt would still pour from a salt shaker.

If you’re playing Twenty Questions, Chalk is “animal”, not “mineral”. It forms under reasonably deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation of minute calcite shells (coccoliths) shed from micro-organisms called coccolithophores. Using the Twenty Questions format, one can correctly guess any number from one to a million, or any other object from a million samples. Three million, if you are told in advance whether it is “animal, vegetable or mineral”.

Calcium sulfate, CaSO[sub]4[/sub], and calcium carbonate, CaCO[sub]3[/sub], are common forms of chalk used frequently in school classrooms until the 2000s on blackboards or slates. Writing slates were in use in Indian schools back in the 11th century. The first classroom uses of large blackboards are difficult to date, but they were used for music education and composition in Europe as far back as the sixteenth century.

When I started school, blackboards were still black, and chalk was still white. Sometime around 1950, the fledgling Pedagogy/Industrial Complex decided that children could see better on a green board with yellow chalk. I couldn’t.

In America, the first use of a wall-mounted blackboard occurred at West Point Military Academy.

The strongly negative response most humans have to the sound of fingernails being [scraped on a chalkboard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalkboard_scraping) may be due to the natural resonance of the ear canal at those frequencies, or its similarity to the warning call of a primate. The latter hypothesis was disproved in a study on macaque monkeys that won Randolph Blake an Ig Nobel Prize.

The only people in the United States who vote for President are the 538 electors who form the Electoral College. There also is no national election for President, only 51 state and DC elections, held on the same day, for slates of electors pledged to vote for particular candidates in the EC. Even the EC does not meet as a body, but only as 51 separate state bodies, also on the same day.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team steadfastly refuse to use the name “Maple Leaves”., and Canadian pedants defended them, ruling that “Maple Leafs” is an acceptable collective noun. No word yet on whether Canada’s Nissan dealers are permitted to call their inventory “Leafs”. Also, in Canada, a singular collective noun takes a plural vierb, as in “Toronto are defending a one-goal lead.” (Hence the verb “refuse” in the first sentence.)

Mike Pearson originally favoured a new flag with three red maple leaves on white, with narrow blue vertical bands on either side. Fortunately, saner heads prevailed and gave us the iconic single red maple leaf flag we have today, designed by George Stanley and manoeuvred through the Commons committee process by Hugh Matheson MP.
