H. G. Wells and Orson Welles met for the first and only time in late October 1940, shortly before the second anniversary of the Mercury Theatre broadcast of the latter’s reading of the former’s work of fiction "The War of the Worlds, “when they both happened to be lecturing in San Antonio, Texas. On October 28, 1940, the two men visited the studios of KTSA radio for an interview by Charles C. Shaw, who introduced them by characterizing the panic generated by the broadcast”: “The country at large was frightened almost out of its wits”. H. G. Wells expressed good-natured skepticism about the actual extent of the panic caused by “this sensational Halloween spree. The character of Mork on Mork & Mindy was played by a then-unknown Robin Williams, who impressed producer Garry Marshall with his quirky comedic ability as soon as they met. When asked to take a seat at the audition, Williams immediately sat on his head on the chair and Marshall cast him on the spot, and later wryly commented that Williams was the only alien who auditioned for the role.

_The Tailor of Gloucester_ was the only one of the 24 Beatrix Potter “tales” published by Frederick Warne to feature a human protagonist. Like the other tales, starting with _The Tale of Peter Rabbit_ in 1902, animals play a prominent role; the tailor’s housekeeper is a cat and when he falls ill, mice to whom he has been kind finish his work.

Potter was an innovator in her time, one of the first children’s writers to use illustrations to carefully complement the text; she insisted that her publishers print “small books for small hands” in contrast to the large, heavy collections then in vogue.
