_El Capitan_ was an 1896 operetta in three acts by John Philip Sousa. The piece was Sousa’s first successful operetta and his most successful stage work. The march “El Capitan” became a standard work both for brass bands and a crossover into other genres; it and the operetta have nothing to do with Pike’s Peak or the Yosemite rock formation also called El Capitan.
