The poet John Milton (1608-1679) was once considered England’s greatest writer. He was seen as superior even to Shakespeare, whose language and scenes were considered coarse and crude. Milton’s _Paradise Lost_ is unrivalled as the greatest religious epic in the English language. He wrote most of the poem when he had lost his sight; he would compose around 30 lines every night, memorize them and then dictate them to a scribe who arrived in the morning. ---

On January 25, 1971, Idi Amin Dada seized power in a military _coup d’état_ from President Milton Obote, beginning eight years of military rule in Uganda. Amin’s rule was characterized by human rights abuses, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000. ---

Far from paying for his crimes, Idi Amin decamped with his fortune to Libya and then onward to Saudi Arabia, where he was given sanctuary, dying there in 2003 at age 78. ---

Idi Amin was played by American actor Forest Whitaker in the 2006 British drama _The Last King of Scotland_. Whitaker, who was born in Longview, Texas in 1961, won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance. ---

According to the Texas State Historical Society, the lyrics of the earliest version of the song “The Yellow Rose of Texas” originally referred to “a yellow girl,” a term used to describe a light-skinned bi-racial woman born of African-American and white progenitors. The song is written in the first person from the perspective of an African-American singer who refers to himself as a “darkey,” longing to return to his “yellow girl”. ---

Playing off of “liberated”: the Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber was one of the mainstay bombers of the Allied Forces in the European Theater of WWII. At nearly 19,000 units, it holds the distinction of being _ **the most produced heavy bomber in history** _, _ **the most produced multi-engine aircraft in history** _ and _ **the most-produced American military aircraft** _. There are only two known airworthy examples of the B-24: _ **Diamond Lil** _ of the Commemorative Air Force (B-24/B-29 Squadron) in Addison TX, and _ **Witchcraft** _, of the Collings Foundation in Stow MA. ---

Lactose is a sugar found in milk. Lactase is the enzyme necessary to digest lactose. In most mammals, the production of lactase gradually declines towards adulthood. In humans, lactase persistence into adulthood is a genetic difference between different populations. It is strongest in people of northern European heritage, where milk was a major protein source, as well as in some other pastoral peoples in Central Asia. However, in large parts of the world, such as Africa, south Asia and South America, populations are largely lactose-intolerant, as the production of lactase in the body gradually declines towards adulthood. ---
