There is no S in the sentence “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” It should be “jumps”. The use of “jumped” came when when the 1885 phrase was expanded to “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back” to test teletype printers, in order to include the apostrophe, and add the word “back” to the standard print line of teletype page width.

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country” is a variant of a phrase proposed as a typing drill by a teacher named Charles E. Weller. It exactly fills out a 70-space line if you put a period at the end.

The English word _fart_ is one of the oldest words in the English lexicon. It can be used as a noun or a verb (come to think of it, _shit_ can, too). _Fart_ appears in several of Geoffrey Chaucer’s _Canterbury Tales_. The phrase ‘broke wind’ is another way to say someone farted.

Caryn Elaine Johnson was the second African-American woman in the history of the Academy Awards to win an acting Oscar. She won the Oscar for best supporting actress for portraying Oda Mae Brown in the 1990 movie _Ghost_. The first African-American woman to win was Hattie McDaniel for portraying Mammy in the 1939 movie, _Gone with the Wind_.

Caryn Elaine Johnson is best known by her stage name Whoopi Goldberg. The name was taken from a whoopee cushion. Said Goldberg, “If you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion.’ And that’s where the name came from.” She said in 2011, “My mother did not name me Whoopi, but Goldberg is my name, it’s part of my family, part of my heritage. Just like being black.”

Whoopi Goldberg was the first African-American actress to receive two acting nominations overall. She was nominated for portraying Celie Johnson in the 1985 movie _The Color Purple_, which was the first time multiple African-American actresses received nominations for the same film – Oprah Winfrey was also nominated for Supporting Actress for portraying Sofia in that movie.

It was rebuilt by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. During the reign of Justinian it flourished, being surrounded with great fortress walls whose remnants can still be seen today.

The Michelin Man, made of stacked tires, is named Bibendum, Latin for “Let us eat”. He first appeared at the Lyon Exhibition of 1894 where the Michelin brothers had a stand. The 1898 poster showed him offering the toast _Nunc est bibendum_ to his scrawny competitors with a glass full of road hazards, with the title and the tag \*C’est à dire : À votre santé. Le pneu Michelin boit l’obstacle \*(“That is to say, to your health. The Michelin tire drinks up obstacles”). The implication is that Michelin tires will easily take on road hazards.

As of 2011, the top three tire manufacturing companies by revenue were Bridgestone (manufacturing 190 million tires), Michelin (184 million), Goodyear (181 million); they were followed by Continental, and Pirelli (no doubt aided by their great calendars).

But… the Lego group produced over 318 million toy tires in 2011 and was recognized by Guinness World Records as having the highest annual production of tires by any manufacturer.

The use of the CH as the country code for Switzerland dates back at least 100 years, to its use on the oval to identify European cars by country of origin. Most used the obvious one or two letters in the spelling of the country in its own language. For Switzerland, the abbreviation was for Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin name given the region by the Romans. Others what wouid not be obvious to an English speaker are D=Deutschland, E=Espana, SF=Suomi/Finland, and FL=Furstentum Liechtenstein
