James K. Polk was probably the first President to be photographed while in office, although some historians believe that William Henry Harrison may have been but the photograph was subsequently lost: [http://www.historybyzim.com/2013/02/first-president-photograph/](http://www.historybyzim.com/2013/02/first-president-photograph/)

Harry Harrison was an American science fiction author, known for his ‘Deathworld’ trilogy, his most famous character, the Stainless Steel Rat and for his novel _Make Room! Make Room!_ The latter was the rough basis for the motion picture _Soylent Green_ (1973). During the 1950s and 1960s, he was the main writer of the Flash Gordon newspaper strip.

[well thanks – I think I’ll return to the bloodied field of Flodden]

While Sir David Home of Wedderburn died at the Battle of Flodden, he can take solace that his seven oldest sons fought with him at that Battle and were immortalized in poem.
Andrew Pitcairn, Laird of Innerthey, was less fortunate. He and seven sons _all_ died at Flodden on that ill-fated Ninth of September, along with their sovereign, James IV King of Scots.

The phrase ‘Seven Sisters of Oil’ refers to the seven companies which dominated petroleum exploration, production and distribution in the mid 20th century. They included Shell, Texaco, what is now BP, and four successor companies to Rockefeller’s Standard Oil. The five American ‘sisters’ have since merged to form just two companies: ExxonMobil and Chevron.

“The Rockafeller Skank” (also known as “Funk Soul Brother”) is a song by English big beat musician and DJ Fatboy Slim. It was a hit single released from the 1998 album You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby. The song features the repeated line “Right about now, the funk soul brother / Check it out now, the funk soul brother”, which is a truncated vocal sample of rapper Lord Finesse on the track “Vinyl Dog Vibe” by Vinyl Dogs, the original line being “Check it out right about now, it’s no other than the funk soul brother, the Lord Finesse”.

The Introductions is the opening scene from the 1990 movie, Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese, where actor Ray Liotta as Henry Hill introduced the mob players:

“\*There was Jimmy and Tommy and me…
…and there was Anthony Stabile, Frankie Carbone…
…and then there was Moe Black’s brother Fat Andy… and his guys Frankie the Wop, Freddie No Nose…
…and then there was Pete the Killer who was Sally Balls’s brother…
…and you had Nicky Eyes, and Mikey Franchesi…
…and Jimmy Two Times who got that nickname because he said everything twice like (I’m gonna go get the papers, get the papers)…

For us to live any other way was nuts. Eh… to us those goody-good people who worked shitty jobs for bum paychecks and took the subway to work every day, worried about their bills, were dead. They were suckers, they had no balls. If we wanted something we just took it. If anyone complained twice they got hit so bad believe me they never complained again. It was just all routine, uhh, you didn’t even think about it.\*”

(I transcribed this from the YouTube link and believe it to be among the most accurate transcripts of this introduction available on the net to date.

“The Simpsons” character Johnny Tightlips (also known by his real name, Jonathan Schmallippe) is a frequently appearing mobster and an associate of Fat Tony in the D’Amico crime family. His catchphrase is “I ain’t sayin’ nothin’!” He is a reference to Frank “Tight Lips” Gusenberg – who was shot down in the real-life St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago and replied, “nobody shot me,” while dying.

Lamar Hunt, founder of the American Football League, watched his children playing with a Super Ball and then coined the term Super Bowl. He wrote a letter to NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle dated July 25, 1966: “I have kiddingly called it the ‘Super Bowl,’ which obviously can be improved upon.” The leagues’ owners decided on the name “AFL-NFL Championship Game,” but the media immediately picked up on Hunt’s “Super Bowl” name, which became official beginning with the third annual game.
