“Pedant” is an archaic English word for a teacher of children. The word is ultimately of Italian origin, and may have entered English directly from Italian during the Renaissance, or via French equivalents.

From the base meaning of teaching, it acquired the related meaning of someone who corrects others. The meaning “one who trumpets minor points of learning” is attested from the 1590s.

In _Hamlet_, Act 3 Scene 2, Hamlet puns pedantically on “capitol” and “capital”:
POLONIUS: I did enact Julius Caesar. I was killed i’ th’ Capitol. Brutus killed me.
HAMLET: It was a brute part of him to kill so capital a calf there.

The 1983 comedy film _Strange Brew_, starring Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as their _SCTV_ characters Bob and Doug McKenzie, is very loosely based on the plot of William Shakespeare’s _Hamlet_. In the film, Bob and Doug themselves are somewhat analogous to the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern characters, and the story is centered at the Elsinore Brewery.

New Zealand director Peter Jackson’s 2003 film _The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King_ showed the royal hall of the city of Minas Tirith, including statues of past kings of Gondor lining the chamber. Gandalf the White, a wizard, and Peregrin “Pippin” Took, a hobbit, met with Denethor, Steward of Gondor, for the first time in this scene.

In Middle-Earth lore, the wizards, or Istari, were five immortal beings sent to Middle-Earth by the Valar to assist men and elves in the struggle against Sauron.

Three of the five wizards appear in _The Lord of the Rings_: Saruman (the White), Gandalf (the Grey, later the White), and Radagast (the Brown). In Peter Jackson’s film versions of _The Hobbit_ and _The Lord of the Rings_, Saruman was played by Christopher Lee, and Gandalf was played by Ian McKellen. Radagast appeared in the _Hobbit_ films, played by Sylvester McCoy.

The other two wizards aren’t named in those books (nor do they appear in the films), but other writings by Tolkien suggest that they were named Alatar and Pallando.
