[Stevenson](http://occasionalplanet.org/2013/03/05/adlai-stevenson-the-last-real-progressive-candidate/)served as governor of Illinois from 1949-1953. He worked to protect civil liberties, but gained special recognition for cracking down on illegal gambling, improving state highways, and reorganizing the state police. He was remarkably popular, despite being described by many as an “egghead intellectual.” He charmed people with his self-deprecating humor. In one speech, he joked, “eggheads of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your yolks!”

When the Green Bay Packers take the field for the 2019 NFL season under new head coach Matt LaFleur, it will only be the second time since 1992 in which the team started a season with a head coach who was not named named “Mike.” Recent previous head coaches were Mike Holmgren (1992-1998), Ray Rhodes (1999), Mike Sherman (2000-2005), and Mike McCarthy (2006-2018).

(McCarthy was fired after 12 games in 2018, and Joe Philbin finished the season as interim head coach.)

The California Raisins were created in 1986 for a Sun-Maid commercial on behalf of the California Raisin Advisory Board. The commercial became extremely popular, which paved the way for several future commercials and opportunities through other media, including the release of four studio albums.

The lead vocals were sung by Buddy Miles, who was a founding member of _The Electric Flag_ and was one of the musicians on Jimi Hendrix’s live album _Band of Gypsys_.

While he was considered the best jazz drummer ever, Buddy Rich’s influence extended from jazz to rock music and jazz fusion. He influenced drummers John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Ian Paice of Deep Purple, and Bill Ward of Black Sabbath. Phil Collins stopped using two bass drums and started playing the hi-hat after reading Rich’s opinion on the importance of the hi-hat. Roger Taylor, drummer of Queen, acknowledged Rich as the best drummer he ever saw for sheer technique.

Chicago Cubs manager Lee Elia ended his managing career due to the [recording of his rant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiVVbYK9HXw) about his team’s fans on April 29, 2983. It was worth it, though. 🙂
Note: All games at Wrigley Field were played in the daytime then, since lights were not installed for some years later.

> F_ck those f_ckin’ fans who come out here and say they’re Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you, rippin’ every f_ckin’ thing you do. I’ll tell you one f_ckin’ thing, I hope we get f_ckin’ hotter than sh_t, just to stuff it up them 3,000 f_ckin’ people that show up every f_ckin’ day, because if they’re the real Chicago f_ckin’ fans, they can kiss my f_ckin’ ass right downtown and PRINT IT.
>
> They’re really, really behind you around here…my f_ckin’ ass. What the f_ck am I supposed to do, go out there and let my f_ckin’ players get destroyed every day and be quiet about it? For the f_ckin’ nickel-dime people who turn up? The motherf_ckers don’t even work. That’s why they’re out at the f_ckin’ game. They oughta go out and get a f_ckin’ job and find out what it’s like to go out and earn a f_ckin’ living. Eighty-five percent of the f_ckin’ world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A f_ckin’ playground for the cocks_ckers. Rip them motherf_ckers. Rip them f_ckin’ cocks_ckers like the f_ckin’ players. We got guys bustin’ their f_ckin’ ass, and them f_ckin’ people boo. And that’s the Cubs? My f_ckin’ ass. They talk about the great f_ckin’ support the players get around here. I haven’t see it this f_ckin’ year. Everybody associated with this organization have been winners their whole f\*ckin’ life. Everybody. And the credit is not given in that respect.
>
> Alright, they don’t show because we’re 5 and 14…and unfortunately, that’s the criteria of them dumb fifteen motherf_ckin’ percent that come out to day baseball. The other eighty-five percent are earning a living. I tell you, it’ll take more than a 5 and 12 or 5 and 14 to destroy the makeup of this club. I guarantee you that. There’s some f_ckin’ pros out there that wanna win. But you’re stuck in a f_ckin’ stigma of the f_ckin’ Dodgers and the Phillies and the Cardinals an all that cheap sh_t. It’s unbelievable. It really is. It’s a disheartening f_ckin’ situation that we’re in right now. Anybody who was associated with the Cub organization four or five years ago that came back and sees the multitude of progress that’s been made will understand that if they’re baseball people, that 5 and 14 doesn’t negate all that work. We got 143 f\*ckin’ games left.
>
> What I’m tryin’ to say is don’t rip them f_ckin’ guys out there. Rip me. If you wanna rip somebody, rip my f_ckin’ ass. But don’t rip them f\*ckin’ guys ‘cause they’re givin’ everything they can give. And right now they’re tryin’ to do more than God gave 'em, and that’s why we make the simple mistakes. That’s exactly why.

Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, was the last Major League Baseball stadium to install lights (and thus have night games), holding out for several decades after other teams had added lights. Finally, under pressure from the league to install lights (and under the threat of having “home” playoff games actually played on the road), the Cubs installed lights in 1988.

The first night game at Wrigley field was on August 8th, 1988 (8-8-88), against Philadelphia though as that game was rained out after 3 1/2 innings (and, thus, didn’t count as a game), the first official night game was played the following night, against the New York Mets.

The 1940 film _The Philadelphia Story_ was actress Katharine Hepburn’s first big hit following several flops, which had led to her being included on a 1938 list of actors considered to be “box office poison”. The film was one of the biggest hits of 1940, breaking records at Radio City Music Hall. The review in _Time_ declared, “Come on back, Katie, all is forgiven.”
