In _The Matrix_, computer hacker Thomas Anderson, soon to become Neo (Keanu Reeves), is told by Morpheus to “follow the White Rabbit.” He meets a girl with a White Rabbit tattoo and impulsively decides to follow her to a nightclub, setting his adventure in motion. The White Rabbit is almost certainly an allusion to the Lewis Carroll character from _Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland_, as Neo, like Alice, learns that the world was not at all as he thought it was.

ETA: Grace Slick does not appear in the movie.

The NAACP Image Award is an annual awards ceremony presented by the U.S.-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to honor outstanding performances in film, television, music, and literature. Similar to other awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys, the over 40 categories of the Image Awards are voted on by the award organization’s members (in this case, NAACP members). Anthony Anderson, star of “Black-ish”, has hosted the last 6 awards programs.

The site of the UN headquarters in Manhattan, formerly the site of Turtle Bay, which was filled with slaughterhouses and tenement buildings, is outside US jurisdiction. However, in exchange for local police, fire protection and other services, the United Nations agrees to acknowledge most local, state, and federal laws.

While the complex, opened in 1952, was being built, the UN used the Sperry Corporation offices in Lake Success, Long Island, after several other temporary sites, including the 1939 (and later 1964) World’s Fair site in Flushing Meadows.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is a leftover from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Century of Progress. It was the Art Pavilion, and after the fair ended, it was turned into the Museum of Natural History, until 1933 when it became the Museum of Science and Industry.

The first place black performers were seen on TV regularly was Ed Sullivan. Among his favorite performers in the early days were the great stars Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Bailey and Nat King Cole, who shook hands with Ed, causing an uproar at the time.

Ed Sullivan would later a huge promoter and advocate of Motown artists and his show gave them a national platform to share their talents. The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, just to name a few, were all part of the incredible roster of Motown acts who appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show.
