Paper currency first came into use in ancient China, when merchants found that they were unable to continue to carry all of their money, all coins, because they were simply too heavy. In the 600s, the first circulating paper money came into use due to a copper shortage that made it impossible to mint new coins.

Andrew Jackson’s forces won a decisive victory over British forces at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. Ironically, the war had already been concluded by the Treaty of Ghent.

Johnny Horton’s song, _The Battle of New Orleans_ was released in 1959. Horton was killed in 1960 in a head-on crash with a drunk driver. At the time, he was married to Billie Jean Jones, the widow of Hank Williams, Sr.

_The Battle of New Orleans_ was a 1959 #1 hit on both the pop and country charts in for Johnny Horton and won him a Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording. In 1953, Horton had married Billie Jean Jones, widow of Hank Williams; in 1960 he was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver.
