In July 2005, Spain became the third country to legalize same-sex marriage, after the Netherlands and Belgium. In the same year it also legalized full joint adoption by same-sex couples.

**off-game** No 3 position re same-sex marriage: Canada missed it by _that much_: the bill passed the Commons before Spain’s law was passed, but didn’t get Royal Assent until after the Spanish law came into force. “We’re number 4!”

**On-game** The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925 by the union of the Methodist Church of Canada, most of the congregations of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, and the Congregational Church, as well as some independent churches in the Prairies.

Like the flag of Ukraine, the flag of the City of Regina, capital of Saskatchewan, is a blue over gold bi-colour, with the addition of a Crown in the upper fess. The similarity in motif may be because both are located in prairie areas, with grain crops as the main agricultural activity.

The Regina Music Box Company gained great success with their music boxes, having 80% or more of the US market at their peak. But the phonograph killed demand for music boxes, so Regina branched out, selling its first vacuum cleaner in 1903. By the 1930s, vacuums became their main product, and they continued to produce them until purchased by Philips Electronics in 1995.

Frank Miller was the Premier who broke the Ontario Progressive Conservatives’ 42 year streak in power in Ontario. He won a plurality of seats on the 1985 election, but was defeated on a motion of non-confidence after the election. The Lieutenant Governor called on the leader of the second-largest party, David Peterson of the Liberals, to form a minority government.

Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard the Pirate, had 41 different ships during his short “career” – he died in 1718 when he was about 38 years old. One of his ships was the _Queen Anne’s Revenge_. Blackbeard’s birthdate is not certain, but is believed to be around 1680.
