CUA is the three-letter IATA airport code for the airport at Ciudad Constitución, BCS, Mexico (Baja California Sur). Anyone driving from San Diego, California to Cabo San Lucas, BCS on Mexico Hwy 1 will drive through Ciudad Constitución which is between Loreto and La Paz.

“Mule Days” is a celebration of the mule held annually in Bishop, California on Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a fun and educational celebration of the humble animal that helped settle the western United States, especially the mountainous regions. The US Marine Corps team from the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, CA usually makes an appearance st this event. Yes, the USMC has a unit that operates with mules even in this modern day of specialized technology.

Mactan (or Maktan) Island is one of the over 7,000 islands of the Philippine archipelago. It is close to the island of Cebu, in the southern part of the country. On 27 April 1521, Ferdinand Magellan was killed in a battle on Mactan Island.

The US took over the Philippines after the Spanish American War. The filipinos did not like being a US colony and fought several wars – all unsuccessful – to drive the Americans out. Finally, the US agreed in 1935 to grand commonwealth status to the islands, with independence in ten years. World War II set that schedule back a bit to July 4, 1946.
