Trivia Quiz on Billboard #1 Songs

:smack:
Yeah, I was way wrong on that one.

One of the Michael Jackson Thriller songs?

Even earlier.

Don’t Stop `Tll You Get Enough by Michael Jackson (1979)

Pardon ME??? The Twist by Chuck Berry??? If your going to be all snarky, get your fact right. Thank you.

Queen, Bohemian Rapsody? (For it’s Wayne’s World revival.)

Frankie Avalon’s “Venus” is a different song.

Oops, that was the whole point. Please ignore my last post.

Correct (Except for the minor nit that it’s “Mony, Mony.” The title was inspired by the Mutual Of New York sign)

Probably Chic’s “Good Times,” sampled in The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”

“It’s My Party,” Leslie Gore

Leslie Gore is right, 42fish. The first #1 to be sampled is actually “I Can’t Get Next to You” by the Temptations. They sampled the opening of the song in the opening of another one of their songs, “Psychdelic Shack.” “Good Times” is probably number 2.

Another answer to the “same title, different tune” is “My Love” by Petula Clark and Paul McCartney.

The original question was:

The only song in the rock era (1955+) to have been #1 on the Billboard charts, fall off the charts entirely and re-enter the charts to take the #1 position again.

This is the same as my original question #4 - The only Number #1 song recording (i.e. same version with same studio recording) to reach #1 on two separate occasions?

The only answer to this question for the period of 1955 through to the end of 2003 is The Twist by Chuck Berry.

If my response was “snarky” it was, first of all not directed to you, but rather to the person who had asked the question since it was simply taking my earlier question and rephrasing it. If the question was attempting to address another issue then it wasn’t coming through after reading it.

Right song, wrong artist.

:smack: :smack: :wally That’s what I get for trying to hurry up a response! Sorry :smack: :smack:

Artist: Chubby Checker (not even very close - Chubby/Chuck and Berry/Checker)!

Actually, there were several more cases of different songs with the same title reaching #1.

Both Van Halen and Kriss Kross reached #1 with different songs called “Jump.”

Both Petula Clark and Paul McCartney/Wings hit #1 with songs called “My Love.”

Both Bobby Goldsboro and Mariah Carey had #1 singles called “Honey.”

Both Huey Lewis & the News and Celine Dion topped the charts with different songs called “The Power of Love.”

Bon Jovi and the Rembrandts both reached #1 with different songs called “I’ll Be There For You.”

Both Maxi Priest and the Carpenters had #1 hits called “Close to You.”

oops- scratch one. The Rembrandts didn’t come close to hitting #1. Sorry.

Technically the Carpenters song is titled (They Long to Be) Close to You. Good job on the others.

To continue the madness and acknowledging previously numbered questions here are #23 through #32:

  1. This actually refers to a pre-rock era #1 but nonetheless has a twisted history of sorts. One of the members of the group was married to the president and founder of Cadence Records and her daughter was married to Phil Everly (the Everly Brothers original hits were on Cadence but after the fiascos regarding censorship they jumped ship). What was the #1 song and what was the name of the group?
  2. I have a longtime fantasy associated with Daryl Hannah and this #1 song was the featured song from one of her steamier movie roles.
  3. An earlier question posed by another Doper asked about the first #1 song that sampled another song. Well this #1 song, at least in the eyes of the courts, sampled an earlier #1 song from the 60’s and resulted in the first #1 hit for this post insecticide challenged artist.
  4. Again deviating from a previous question dealing with #1 songs with American cities, what are the #1 songs that contain the name of a state in their title?
  5. This #1 song shares the same title as a song written by the brother of previously referenced Leslie Gore. Despite his long association in the music business this was his only #1 single and as further useless trivia, his wife at the time was the inspiration for the Rolling Stones #1 hit titled “Angie”.
  6. These #1 songs shared a desire to specify a time or range of times, what were they?
  7. These #1 songs all reference a more general sense of time (morning, etc.). What were they?
  8. Let’s focus on family here. What, if any, #1 songs were done by father-daughter, mother-daughter, or any other similar immediate family combinations?
  9. Admittedly this partially duplicates question #30 but half of this group was the first girl to tour with the Beach Boys. What was the group?
  10. I have to include this since it is the city that I currently work in. A Pasco, Washington DJ was the first to play this foreign song, in America, off of the original LP and helped it to become a #1 hit in this country along with reaching #6 in Britain.

That’s in conflict with your claim that Chuck Berry’s only number one hit was “My Ding-a-ling”. Is Chuck Berry a typo for Chubby Checker?

George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” was found to be a ripoff of The Chiffon’s “He’s So Fine.”

David Bowie’s “Fame” is the song, but Bowie actually hit number one again in 1983 with “Let’s Dance.” Also, according to info here, “Angie” was actually about Keith Richards’ girlfriend.

Yes - see my apology above.
