It’s embarrasing that adults are in to superhero movies.

Holocaust survivors aren’t “sporting” tattoos. They had them forced upon them. Their tattoos aren’t misguided fashion statements.

That seems like a very hair-splitting distinction. It’s like saying that “John Smith is an excellent painter, but a terrible artist” because his naked lady paintings on black velvet are painted VERY well.

It ultimately doesn’t matter how well crafted your actual language is, if your story and characters are subpar.

> “Extra hoppy ale” isn’t a brilliant artisanal creation; if I wanted something that tastes like a bowl of rancid potpourri left to ferment in the sun for six weeks I could make that myself. “Milk chocolate orange stout” may sound nifty but it tastes like you mixed cocoa powder, orange-scented dishwashing soap and two-day-old coffee grounds together. Stop trying to make beer taste like something other than beer.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say craft beer sucks, but it’s one of those things where there are relatively low barriers to entry, so there are a LOT of craft breweries out there, all chasing the same population of drinkers.

Nobody’s going to make money making a good, solid version of a beer type that’s been around a while- like say… a standard American Pale Ale like Sierra Nevada.

So what you end up with is a game of follow-the-leader, where a handful of brewers try something “new”, it sells, and the rest follow suit. From what I can tell, first it was super-hoppy IPAs, then it was Gose/Sour/Berliner Weisse, and now we seem to have transitioned into lagers, mostly pilsner types.

I would say I foresee a bloodletting in the industry, but I suspect we’ll just see a lot of churn among the newer micros, and the larger ones will just follow the trends and leverage their superior capacity, production control and distribution networks to make money off the trends.

Accent walls are stupid and 20 years from now people will look at pictures of the inside of their house and shudder like they were egg chairs or pet rocks.

The Star Wars franchise is no longer for children and that is very weird and a long term mistake.

When you take your child to the park, unless they are about to immanently kill themselves or someone else, shut the fuck up and leave them alone. They will come to you if they need something, but they will never need instruction on how playgrounds work. “Scarlet! Scarlet! Don’t you want to play with Jacob? Look what Jacob is doing! Don’t you want to play with him? Scarlet! Are you hungry? Do you need some juice? Scarlet! Come over here, don’t you want to slide down this slide? Scarlet!” Shut Up. All Parents. Shut Up. Do your crossword, tune out with your ear buds and John Mayer music and chill. K. That last one was more of a rant.

Enh. No.

My first kid didn’t comprehend how to go down a slide. Would just go and fall backwards and slam his head on the slide.

Also as far as empathy, ‘mother goose following’, and understanding of your tribe/family? Very low. I HAD to helicopter him to keep him from wandering into traffic, wiping boogers on other kids, wandering into someone elses reunion and helping himself to food. Now, this last part I appreciate how not fearing strangers and meeting people can be interesting. When i was a kid and my aunt watched me, I took my big wheel to the high school across the street and just started wheeling down the hallways. I’m sure the students got a kick out of it. I’m sure the teachers were like “The fuh.”

Edit: I read your ‘rant’ more closely and see you’re excusing my kid.

Fiction is…wait for it…fiiiictionnnn Fictional characterrrrrrs.

If a guy writes a song that doesn’t mean the writer fully endorses what is being sung. So it is with TV, novels, movies…etc…etc…

If South Park says turning yourself into a dolphin doesnt make you a dolphin…that doesn’t nessecerily mean Matt and Trey are transphobic.\* If they write an ep where Gore was right about ManBearPig…it doesn’t mean they’re nessecerily apologizing for shit.

\*Here’s a seperate rant!!: Even IF Matt and Trey believe lopping off your dick doesn’t make you anymore of a woman then hiding behind a wall makes you invisible, that doesn’t make them transphobic. I seriously doubt Matt and Trey fear OR hate transsexuals.

Or are we really expanding the definition of phobic to mean “Offends said group”?

It’s always meant that. The second definition in most dictionaries is “intolerance or aversion for.” Hydrophobic material, for example, is not afraid of or does not hate water it merely repels it.

Eh. I’d let my kid wipe booger’s on another kid and walk over to a reunion for food. Parents have gotten so weird, both ways, neglectful or overprotective. It’s not our fault. There is a strange pressure that our parents or thier’s never had to deal with.

I am 40 and through most of my childhood never had a seatbelt on. Have cars changes that much? Can you imagine the public shaming of a parent getting in a car without the PROPER booster seat for a 7 year old?

I agree 100% with sentiment. But this is not what makes them so awful.

It is the fact there was this hinted at dark past to Star Wars, that was left untold, and I spent my childhood imagining what that past story was like, how terrible but epic it must be.

Now when I watch Star Wars, I find myself thinking that for a split second, before I remember “Oh yeah they told that story and it was a steaming pile of shite”

In fact Episode III wasn’t quite as awful as the first two (episode II was the worst of the lot), but that actually made it even worse, it hinted at what it _could_ have been. It was just good (or less awful) enough to make you think, “oh yeah this trilogy could have been the epic tragic back story Star Wars deserved”.

I actually like Esiode VII, IMO it _could_ have been part of that epic backstory (if wasn’t set in the “future”), the other new films are clearly on the path to the dark (aka prequel) side.

I’ve learned a lot from this thread. Much of it ways to cope with a world that doesn’t agree with me.

When my hipster friends are extolling the Almost Undrinkability of our latest super-hoppy micro-brewery, I’ll quietly think “Yeah, I went through a bitter phase too. But mine was 8th grade and I just got over it sooner than these guys did…”

And I’ve learned that I’m just going to ignore media that sucks… like Eps 1-3, so there could be a dark backstory that stayed murky… and midichlorian-less. Oh, I’ll ignore George’s re-edits, too, so Greedo never got to fire his blaster…

I think the Star Wars prequels had the same problem Star Trek: Enterprise and the Matrix sequels had. They explained too much and took away a lot of the awe and mystique of their respective franchises.

I don’t believe that you necessarily find more “hair on the brush” when you are going bald. I believe that it’s much more likely that your hair simply falls out at the same rate as always, and you don’t really notice an increase, it’s just that your hair stops growing back as much. I have absolutely no evidence that this is true, or in fact that it’s even controversial. But I do believe it.

All recorded music sounds better if you add compression. It’s like throwing a switch that says “Beatles” on it. Wide dynamic range is a false god. Noise reduction is an abomination.

Depending on how it’s done, records that are “electronically reprocessed for stereo” can be an improvement.

I have a theory that the only way Trump will have leave something positive as a legacy is if he forces the conversion to metric system, and if gets rid of the paper dollar. It will take several years for people to stop being pissed off; but once people are used to both of them, he’d be lauded for it. 🙂 I think it’s crazy that the $1 bill is still around while it’s worth what a quarter was in the 70s.

A friend of mine works for Miller/Coors and she said that the craft beer market is crashing. Actually all beers have seen a decline as people are now interested in all of the varieties of bourbon. It’s doomed to fail. The first several craft beers were nice because you could get them at your local watering hole on tap; and it was kind of enjoyable to go the brewery for samples, etc. Now it’s on to something new. I think a large chunk of it is a fad that won’t sustain itself.

Agree about Robin Williams; I liked him for his acting; but his comedy stuff is a little too manic for me. Jumping around making weird noises. Which reminds me; Adam Sandler sucks ass, and ranks up there with Dane Cook for not being funny. I’d like to add Edgar Alan Poe on there. Oh he wrote some really great things; but he’s like the one hit wonder of authors; providing many more misses than hits.
