I’m of much the same mind. The attitudes behind the phrase are almost always that of a consummate bully who smugly assumes they are “winning” by making the other person angry. It’s almost always deliberate manipulation, and often accompanied by what we refer to as “sea lion” behavior. So they demand to be treated with respect while actively trying to provoke a _hurtful_ emotional reaction. No one in my experience has ever used the phrase and did NOT mean it to hurt, although those using it ironically may well feel justified. ---

I doubt there’s anyone in the thread that did not WANT to hurt someone, and felt it was justified, but they almost never try to obfuscate, they did it to point out attack, or vent their almost always justified rage at poor behavior of others who were protected by the rules of other forums. I don’t pretend that we’re unsoiled paragons of Good here - we see assholish behavior and we call it out. Sometimes we are wrong, or misinterpret, but we’ve got a pretty good track record. And sometimes people read their pittings and improve. The ones that get super defensive though, or try to deflect blame, like, oh, maybe it’ll come to me, starts with a sibilant sound… it’ll come back to me, couldn’t be anyone important, well, those sorts of people are almost always driven by the desire to bully, or who want to appear superior to others, with little if any justification. But hey, if you think this thread/forum is low value, there are many others who dislike it as well, but the commonalities are bloody obvious to everyone else. ---

Sure, I’ll own it. That’s why I said ‘pretty good’, not great, not perfect - we’re far from it. Our egos and emotions get in the way. Which is why I (and I suspect a lot of the others) will post _here_ to see if someone else gets that same ‘troll-tingle’ from a poster, and we’ll often debate. But it’s a discussion that can’t happen outside of the pit, _and for good reason_. But few if any here are concealing their feelings or motivations, unlike most sea-lions, who hide their hate and contempt behind the veneer of civility. ---

All worthwhile points. I am just resistant to the use of “us” and “we” as if there is an inevitable coalescing of opinion on the various flavors of troll-like beings that visit our sphere. I am also not a fan of the sweetheart relationship between this thread and at least one moderator, but that’s another topic, I guess. ---

You guys use the same formula time after time. - Find someone that you don’t like for “reasons” - Rally the posse in Trolls R Us - Start gossiping (don’t use @) wink-wink. - When the person finds out and responds - Bull rush them It’s not unexpected given the state of US society. I don’t know what the fix is. ---
