Right, if I recall correctly YWTF was topic-banned from anything related to transgender following her _extensive_ participation in the JK Rowlings thread. The misgendering rule came after.

Speaking of rules and clarity, I’m not sure **Kimstu** is correct on this point:

> [@Kimstu](#):
>
> What we can’t do is to use expressions like “women and trans women”, or “men and transgender men”, or “women and trans-identified males”, or “women and MEN who feel like they’re women”, or similar terms that deliberately exclude transgender people from the generic descriptor for their gender identity.

Having re-read the relevant rule(s),

> [@Reorganized SDMB rules](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/reorganized-sdmb-rules/968857/1):
>
> - Do not deliberately misgender another poster – that is, refer to them by a pronoun or other sex-specific term indicating a gender other than the one they identify as. This applies only in cases where a poster’s gender identity is reasonably clear. Likewise, do not deliberately misgender off-board figures.
> - **The use of the term cisgender or the prefix cis- to refer to individuals whose gender identity matches their biological sex is not required** but can be helpful in avoiding ambiguity when discussing transgender issues. That said, we do not have a code of acceptable gender-related expressions and do not wish to referee terminology. Please be considerate of the feelings of others and avoid needless provocation when using gender-related terms. If you feel others are using gender-relating terms or expressions improperly and you wish to correct them, please do so in a civil manner.

I believe a person who normally thinks of “women” as only “cis-woman” would read the above rule without realizing the rules prohibit a phrase such as “women and trans women”. Even if they are making good faith efforts to be respectful of the terminology and other board members, I think such a phrase could casually slip out. So if the administration’s position is that generic “women” shall include trans women on these boards, I think it would be helpful to put that in the rules. It isn’t intuitive in my opinion, and absent evidence of malicious intent or repeated behavior I think an infraction should get a modnote at worst.
