> I see no mention of selling by JohnT. One could argue that perhaps buying would be a smarter move at that moment, but if one thought the market would drop further, why buy right then? (It does appear Mar 2020 was the low point for the DJIA, but it remained low if slowly rising the rest of the year.

Remember, my theses is that, as an economic unit, Octopus is a negative contributor to this Board’s balance sheet and income statements. And what you quoted goes to that.

Let me explain…

Octopus, in an effort to deflect my argument that he is an economic liability, accused me of telling people to sell their stock in the March, 2020, freefall. I asked him for a cite, knowing that I did no such thing, and he quotes the Stock Market Corona thread as proof.

He did this knowing that I would have to spend my time refuting him. But here’s the thing: the entire accusation was a lie to begin with. Had Octopus been honest, he would have withdrawn the silly charge above _because he did so in the cited thread_.

Let me quote our exchange, in full. You do not have to expand the links to get the flow of the conversation, btw:

Some posts, then this occurred:

> Yet, productivity and progress keep moving forward! What, precisely, is your investment strategy? I don’t know about you but my crystal ball, my tea leaves, my duck entrails don’t work to find absolute minimums or maximums in markets. And since I don’t buy nor sell at one period in time I don’t care about extrema in any event. In long term investing you can’t be guided by emotions, hysteria, or bad information. Tell me, what are you doing with your retirement accounts? What’s your age? Are y…

> Again, you’re fantasizing, making up things, and accusing me of them. Since when did I ever, ever mention “my investing strategy”? My investment strategy? I was born to a wealthy family. Lots of inheritance money in accounts I barely even look at, just have my guy rebalance them. Cool trick if you can manage it. I even get a free dinner every year and invites to the money managers swank Christmas party!

> I said this was the time to hold, not sell, nor buy. If you’re doing a DCA, continue it. If you’re trying to time the market, stop. I would like to note that you literally responded to my “The markets are still in free fall, so now is the right time to hold” comment, and then 10-odd posts later, you challenge me to give my advice.

> No problem, my friend. As far as personal investing is concerned, we are on the same page. But ones returns are a function of historical timing, which is uncontrollable.

(“DCA” in the above stands for [dollar cost averaging](https://www.finra.org/investors/insights/dollar-cost-averaging).)

I mean, this entire exchange was the complete and utter opposite of what he said it was. And it’s this _lying_ which exacts an economic cost on every poster he lies about and to. He imposed a cost on me for having to defend this shit, he imposes costs on the mods who are now presented with yet another example of his negative value to the SDMB as well as an outright violation of the ‘don’t be a jerk’ rule, my God, as a business case analysis, Mr Sprint 1,000, you’re just a financial disaster for this place.
