Having said that, it does seem like we should at least be able to set up half a dozen major airport desitnations spread out around the country so that the soldiers could get home with at most a day’s bus ride.
Servicemen have always paid their own way unless able to hop a MAC flight. I paid for every unofficial plane ride I ever took in 23 years of service, save one hop that I was able to catch out of the Aleutians. Years ago, airlines gave substantial discounts to servicemen, with the only requirement being that you had to travel in dress uniform. Paying for tickets is not something new and the taxpayer is not obligated to foot the bill.
People have the goddamnedest misconceptions about those who work for the government. My former sister-in-law actually informed me at one time that we military types had it good because we could go to the commissary and just take whatever food we needed. Free. What a total fucking airhead.
All the whining that some of the troops in Iraq are doing is just plain disgusting to me, and the people who are buying into it are gullible fools. They are there by dint of their chosen careers. The morality of the war and the legality of our occupation of a sovereign nation are separate issues. These folks signed on for a job and are obligated to perform it. Cripes.
