Tropical Oasis at the South Pole

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym predates that significantly.

Yeah, but the idea in The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is rather different. It’s about the Earth being hollow. It’s possible in that story to enter the inside by a hole at the South Pole. This was supposed to be a natural thing, not something created by someone heating a section of Antartica.

Pretty unlikely, I’ve never heard of the Savage Land stuff you’re talking about (cept when you mentioned it). However I have had a long standing fascination with the Antarctic, and I’ve always wanted to go there, and I really really really hate the cold, so it’s hardly surprising my brain threw it at me once. In any case I’m not claiming to have been the first person ever to have thought about it. Just that I dreamed it once.

MH, geothermal energy: the antartic plateau is already very elevated, so you need pipes through a helluva lot of ice, then a helluva lot of rock.

PJ, peltier heater: but if both the ice underneath and the rock/soil above are crappy conductors that won’t work? Or it’ll be hella inefficient?
