True Crime Stories: Headline Murders In Your Small Hometown?

I just realized that my post gives the impression that this happened in Salem, Oregon. This all happened in Philomath, Oregon which is my hometown. I was living in Salem at the time, but we moved back shortly thereafter.

Anyway, once again, let me know if anyone finds anything on the net about this. It’s always haunted me. I have George and Shane’s signatures in my yearbooks, fer chrissakes.

No worries, tanstaafl. It happened the year I was born, so I don’t remember too much about it.

Very strange times for the small town of Zeeland Michigan. One day before the 9-11 terrorist attack a young mother (Tracy Camburn) stabbed to death her two daughters ages 11 and 6 after making them drink paint thinner, she claimed that voices told her the world was gonna end. This is a small conservative alcohol-free church dominated town. The trial revealed that she was attending a bible study class that focused on armaggedon and all the evils in the world. Her pastor and Mother think that Tracy somehow ‘knew’ about the WTC attacks in advance! THey classified her insane and sent her to prison for the rest of her life. Also in the news is a another Mom currently on trial also from Zeeland who is accused of setting her 14yo daughters bedroom on fire which resulted in her daughters death. The mother was prone to alcoholic blackouts and was heard to say she hated her daughter because she was disobediant.

I remember this. That poor family, I was very young but wasn’t there some scandals about shirley kinge getting engaged to one of the cops or legal team?

The last two people executed in the UK were hanged for a murder committed in the village I grew up in. This happened about a quarter mile from where we lived. I was a child at the time, but what seems to me now to be extraordinary is that I remember nothing about it from that time - and we’re talking about Back Of Beyond, UK in the 1960s, when murder was an astonishingly rare and terrifying event. We played in the woods right next to the house, so I assume we would all have been locked down for weeks - but I have no memory of it at all.
