I am really enjoying this show.
In the early 1990s, we were just getting over calling them “car phones,” but by 1992, every region covered by cell towers had two cell phone service providers. In my area, the were U.S. Cellular and Cellular One.
If Marty wanted to kill LeDoux to prevent Rust from questioning him he could have easily done it in the house and planted a knife or something on him. That was a rage execution.
Yeah, Woody acted the hell out of that scene and you can see the shifting feelings on his face as he comes out of that shed, shoots LeDoux, and then stands there stunned in the aftermath.
Yeah, let’s talk about the symbolism of the tiara/crown. I thought Audrey taking it from Macie was to show the formerly close sisters growing apart but that’s too easy.
There’s also the “daddy’s little princess” thing, which often changes when a daughter enters her teens.
But tossing it into a tree, like she was afraid of it?
What happened to Ginger the biker dude? Rust said something like “He’s in a ditch.” Does that mean he killed him and dumped the body? Just let him go? Both seem unlikely. They certainly can’t turn him over to the police after the unauthorized undercover shitstorm.
Also, when Marty and Rust were carrying the kids out of the woods, there were emergency vehicles waiting for them. How? They had no way of contacting anybody while out in the woods, which is why Marty was initially going to go back and call for backup.
Hart and Cohle work for the State Police, so their jurisdiction is state-wide and they likely do most of their work in larger cities. The “Spanish Lake” location was in a parish that was some distance away from their base of operations (they haven’t specified, but I suspect it’s Baton Rouge, especially if local celebrities like Rev. Tuttle are dropping by). Remember, they talked about spending the night there and going back the next day. They might not be well acquainted with a sheriff in a remote parish.
I don’t think Rust killed him. Ginger probably lay in a ditch until the authorities left, and then Rust dropped him off somewhere, or just let him walk out.
There was no reason to move the kids until there was someplace to move them to, so they called for backup, waited for the emergency vehicles to show up, and then they carried the kids out.
After the shooting, I assumed one of them went to call for assistance and then returned to help carry out the kids.
I think he just dumped his living duct-taped body into a ditch. Put yourself in Ginger’s shoes. Would you say ANYTHING to ANYONE about what just happened to you, knowing that at the least you will get your ass kicked (again) and at the worst take a dirt nap?
I read “He’s in a ditch” as a joke, and that Ginger is still tied up in the back seat of the truck. Not that it much matters; if he was being literal they can just pick him up later.
…all sort of conjectures out there on the Net…fun to ponder all the possible outcomes.
found this: True Warrior Cats: true Detective Parody, kinda silly but well done (cat ) imagery to the theme song.![]()
I thought she tossed it into the tree as a gesture of malice. She took it from her sister, and her sister was crying. Presumably her sister would tell their parents, and their parents would tell her to give it back, or to share. So I interpreted the gesture as “if I can’t have it, no one can.”
The show does seem to be foreshadowing something concerning Audrey, but I’m not sure what. Maybe there is a darker explanation for the drawings and the barbie doll scene than simply sexual curiosity. Did she witness something?
I took it that way too.
I hesitate to say this, because we may soon find out that all this foreshadows exposure to a murderous rape cult, but I’ve found most of the action with the daughters to be unusually true to life. The way they bicker, the way the younger one lingers and dawdles as Marty orders her out of the room - it looks like the real sister interactions I see from my elementary school daughters. (Luckily our Barbie:Ken ratio is the opposite of the kids’ in the show, so no chance of accidental or meaningful gang bang re-enactments.)
I’m pretty sure the older sister is a victim of sexual abuse. Her behavior as a teenager is a classic response to childhood sexual abuse. Add to that her using her barbies to depict a gang rape, and the conclusion seems pretty inescapable. The question is who did it.
I agree on all the abuse speculation, but just to be clear, with the princess thing I was getting at “The King in Yellow.”
You might also argue that losing the tiara was a metaphor for losing her childhood - i.e. being sexually assaulted.
That’s an interesting idea. I will be annoyed if Marty is directly involved with or turns out to be the King, because nothing we have seen so far would justify such a revelation, but maybe Audrey is connected to the Yellow King in a way that her parents are unaware of.
I wonder what kind of resolution they plan to offer to the whole Yellow King storyline. When the girls with antlers were linked to some kind of pagan cult, I thought it was odd because I’m pretty sure antlers are usually linked to male deities and not female (the Horned God). I kept waiting for Rust to make that point or discover it in his research or something.
If anyone’s interested - The King in Yellow for the Kindle is currently available for free on Amazon. ![]()
If you haven’t see Dallas Buyer’s Club yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s really entertaining (or as entertaining as a movie about AIDS in the 80s can be) and McConaughey delivers an incredible performance. Believe the hype, he deserves the Oscar.
