True Detective - HBO - McConaughey / Harrelson [SPOILERS]

OK, I got mixed up that Childress was the sheriff then, somehow got it in my head the Geraci mentioned he was a deputy somewhere now.

Too many sheriffs and ex-sheriffs and deputies and deputy sheriffs in the mix!

Ha, just thought of a mnemonic to help us remember that Geraci is now a full-on sheriff:

I shocked the sheriff
But I did not shock the deputy . . .

(d&r)

One of the officers where the guy killed himself in jail was also a Childress. (or the same one? Don’t recall his first name, but Rust asked and was told the two officers names when they reviewed the video that ends with the blood seeping out of the jail cell)

I heard Linda Thompson’s voice on the soundtrack. Someone (Rust?) has good taste. I doubt it would be randomly playing in rural Louisiana in 2010.

What was it Rust said to Maggie? It never set well with me that you asked me to lie to you about Marty? What?

Wasn’t that microwave too small?

It only had to fit a baby; they aren’t very big.

It looked too small for even a newborn baby to me. It looked like one of those plate-sized microwaves.

That’s a peculiar observation.

… Said babygoat666.

I loved that line! The one somewhat supernatural element to this series is Rust’s ability to detect lies. He knew that Maggie already knew about Marty’s cheating, but she was using Rust to convince her otherwise. IIRC, Rust did lie to her about Marty once over the phone in one of the earlier episodes.

A phone call distracted me at the end of last night’s episode. Why did Maggie show up at Rust’s bar at the end?

While the series is supposed to end after Episode 8, there has to be some link to the next season. Will next season be Gilbough and Papania, who seem to be similarly annoyed with each other, searching for the Yellow King and Carcosa?

So he took offense at something that almost anyone who starts suspecting a spouse of cheating would do? Seek assurance that it’s not happening?

I think she was just curious. And she wanted assurance from Rust that Marty wasn’t getting into something that would get him killed.

Why does there have to be a link? I’ve heard that it’s an anthology, which means that there need be no link.

Marty told her he agreed to help Rust with something. Maggie says at the bar she wants Rust to not get Marty killed, so presumably that’s what she went there to say.

Indeed, thanks Steken. Did I miss something there?

I haven’t been able to watch episode 7 yet. Every time I open the SDMB this damned thread is here mocking me…ugh!

But she did know already. That was his point. Just because it didn’t “sit well” doesn’t necessarily mean that he was offended. He was probably just uncomfortable. Of all people, Maggie knew that Rust was never going to rat out his partner for cheating. She went to him because he was going to give her the answer that she wanted to hear.

Did they show how she found him?

I didn’t say that there has to be a link. But is it forbidden in anthologies or something? Anyway, that was kind of a joke, since now we see Papania and Gilbough going down the same roads, figuratively and literally, as Marty and Rust once did. And we also see the first signs of them being annoyed with each other, kind of like you know who. Time being a flat circle and all.

I think Maggie is involved and she showed up to find out what the know. Did anyone else notice that when Marty was watching the video, his head blocked the G in the word king behind him? It said KIN.

I’m probably reading too much into it – or reading it wrong – but Maggie still cares enough about Marty to hunt Rust down and ask what’s going on. I think Rust recognized this and is upset not just because she’s making him lie about Marty again, but because what they’re doing could get Marty killed. And Marty, unlike Rust, might have a reason to live.

If something happens to Marty, people will care. Rust has no one.

:smack: He wasn’t resentful of the time 17 years ago when Maggie asked him whether Marty was cheating. He was resentful that at that moment, she wanted Rust to lie to her about Marty’s safety.

Does anyone know where there are screencaps to the picture of Marty’s daughter and the painting that she made from this past episode? Maggie was showing Marty it when he came to visit her. I swear that the painting had black stars.

This may be another coincidence, or at may be another link between Marty’s daughter and the larger plotline.

Good catch!
