Season 2 can’t be as good, almost by definition, but I did find myself enjoying the first episode. Part of that is that I like watching Collin Farrell, and have done since In Bruges. Plus his crazy cop scene with the dad makes McNulty look like a junior cadet.

I’ll give it a few more episodes, at least.

Ha!

You totally suck. Now every time I see Farrell, McAdams or Kitsch on screen I’m going to be mentally saying to myself: “S/he’s real po-lice.”

Is this in reference to The Wire?

I’ve been watching that at night for the past few weeks. I’m about to start the last season. I’m going to be very sad once I’m out of episodes.

I regret not watching the series sooner.

Am looking forward to what people think after tonight’s episode.

I was flushed with the sense of the first episode’s being contrived and with something being awry with the light or the time of day. Hoping hoping that someone something equals Matthew McConaughey’s passion and thoughtfulness.

I would say this new episode was just as bad as the first.

I feel like there was maybe 30 seconds worth of moving the story forward, and all the rest was just wasted fluff.

Anyone else see it?

It seemed really slow and drawn out. Then it got interesting at the very end.

I’m still going to continue watching and see how it plays out.

I was going to watch it, but that HBO channel was just a black screen for me. I later realized it was good on the Spanish language channel and the standard def channels, but I’d already missed a bunch of the ep. Anyone else have that problem?

So Taylor Kitsch’s character’s secret is that he’s gay, right?

I’m curious to see what happens next in regards to Colin Farrell’s character, but the whole main plot line about the political land dealings really holds no interest to me. Last season the whole creepy, satanic, backwoods serial killer angle was intriguing, but this season, corrupt politicians and financial land deals? Snore.

Watching this episode felt like a chore. I feel like there might be a story in this mess somewhere, but I’m struggling to find it. I certainly don’t get the impression that the story is worth using 10 episodes to tell.

Some of the expository dialogue this season is absolutely awful. That entire opening scene with Vince in bed was just cringe-worthy.

If Colin Farrell is dead after two episodes, that does have a kind of gutsy kill-Ned-Stark-at-the-end-of-Season-1 feel to it.

Maybe the rest of the season is going to be more adventurous.

“Dark underbelly of ,” really only works if it’s set in a place that is otherwise big and glamorous on the surface.

Vinci is a tiny accident-of-history industrial jurisdiction with a residential population of 95. There’s hardly a over-belly. How can there be much of an interesting underbelly?

I’ve read that the main storyline is based, in part, on the history of [Vernon, California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon,_California). The town has a population of 112 and had a history of corruption about a hundred years ago surrounding the railroads.

And, BTW, someone upthread thought that four main characters was too many. Well this episode addressed that issue.

I assume this plot point to be modeled after stuff like _Chinatown_ where Cross wants to control the water supply and thus the future and _L.A. Confidential_ where Patchett uses blackmail on politicians to get a freeway project approved. It could work done right; only it’s boring. The show suffers the same problem as last year, namely the writing; with the added problem of having too many characters around. And only Father Of The Year Ray Velcro comes close to being compeling.

I do find it funny though that so far every episode we get a new ginger to be a possibility for being the real rapist of Ray’s ex-wife and bio-dad of his son. Last episode we had Vaughn’s right hand man, this time it’s one of his goons who beat that guy up under the bridge.

Taylor Kitsch’s character is a biker. Of course he’s a closet case.

If Colin Farrell is done, so am I. The rest of the cast is pretty boring, and the plot has been done to death.

The director still pays too much homage to smoking. I think that’s his fetish or something, or RJ Reynolds is paying big again this season.

So the most interesting character gets killed off at the end of the second episode. At least his murderer was interesting; a guy wearing a bird head.

Is it possible that he’ll just end up in the hospital fighting for his life, rather than dead? He wasn’t in any of the “next week on…” scenes but of course they wouldn’t show him.

>
> I binge watched Season 1 over a week. At the final episode, I actually felt real sadness that I wouldn’t be seeing the characters again.
>
> That right there is pretty powerful and speaks to how good those actors are.
>
> I ended up finishing the new episode (S2E1), starting again from the beginning. I found that I missed a lot during the first viewing. I also find that the contrived feel is still there. Right now, sitting here, I don’t really care for the characters (well, I am a bit interested to see where Farrell’s character goes), and so really don’t find myself looking forward to the next episode.
>
> Now that I wrote all the above, I have to come back to contrived; I feel like the show is wasting my time for an amateurish, almost heavy handed approach at making a gritty police show.

Thank you for whst you wrote. I hsve yet to see Episode aren’t you read any comments about episode two. I just really enjoyed how you put it.
