Okay, I admit it, it’s my fault; I was slumming and dived too low. A few months ago we had a “yucky comfort foods” thread and I contributed an old and truly yucky favorite, Swanson’s salisbury steaks on toast. One of my long-time “I’m hungry and want something really awful to eat” standards. So I was in that mood today during a rare lunchtime run to the grocery store, and… they didn’t have any brand-name version of the “gravy plus six small hockey pucks we can get away with calling ‘steaks’ because that’s the historical name for them” product. They had one from a no-name provider, which should have tipped me off. Ignoring the funny smell as they heated because it’s a new microwave and still making some funny smells, I ate two of the small sandwiches before dumping the rest in the trash and considering a one-finger salute to Ralph. Horrid, gluey-tasting, rubbery-smelling garbage; to the regular Swanson stuff what a decent NY strip is to the Swanson product. Thin, textureless, dog-food like (and I know that I because I also bought a rare can of Iams for my ailing Dane.) The brand name is En-Cor, which made me think it’s made from ENtrails and the CORe of golf balls, or maybe other balls best not mentioned. It also comes back again and again. My bad. Your warning. Scuse me, gotta go talk to Ralph on the big white phone now. ---

En-Cor is a very old brand, and has, AFAIK, always been bottom-of-the-line. We knew we were one day away from having to skip a meal when my mom would break out the EnCor “turkey” and gravy. ---

I’m familiar with the brand and it’s actually On-Cor. The lasagna is good and cheap, too. About $3.50 for 28 oz. ---

Overcooked brussels sprouts in fat back. All the worst elements of rotten cabbage, overboiled eggs, and a hint of barnyard d’cochon. The texture was slimy and mushy with a tendency to coat the roof of the mouth in grease with each bite. Honestly, the way folks were eating it I figure their soft palates ended up looking like a dipped candle. Blech! ---

Some kind of spleen, I think it was pig or goat. It was served in bite size pieces and was like chewing superballs soaked overnight in cat piss. ---

Yes…I still eat sushi, but my GOD that was the hardest bite I have ever swallowed. My husband and toddler both like overprocessed cheap Hormel stuff, like Vienna sausage. Also pickled sausages and Limburger. I can’t even get over the smell… ---

Come to the Dominican Republic and try Mofongo. This is made from plantains that are boiled and mashed and other immigrants added in as per pizza. But I believe it is actually made from the droppings of some ruminant animal. ---
