Re: his children — it’s very emotional for adults to contemplate poor fatherless little ones, but honestly a 1.5 & 3 year old won’t really have memories of him. They’ll be fine (or at least, this won’t be the reason they’re not). That’s not making any comment about him (vile) or his death (not a good thing), just to say that “those poor children!” is more about the speaker than the kids. It will certainly be rough on his other survivors. ---

Just being speculative but, it’s a bit disconcerting that it doesn’t appear that we know who this shooter is, where they are, or what they look like. What if they are a professional who knows how to cover their tracks? Imagine if they had a list. If I was Ben Shapiro, I might call in sick tomorrow. ---

I had the misfortune to see the Pearl video all those years ago and it still comes back to me, and not in good ways. I never want to see anything like it, or this event, again. I am curious as to what details will come out regarding things like caliber. While I’m of the opinion that any seasoned deer or elk hunter (and there are plenty in Utah, assuming he was localish) could make such a shot, it really does seem like the most “pro” attempt we’ve seen in a while. Good position, single shot, in an area likely to be fatal even if the bullet misses some. It could get real ugly if people who actually know what they’re doing are willing to start murdering from sniping positions and actually using the right equipment. ---

Anecdote: Ice skater Ekaterine Gordeeva, whose husband collapsed and died when he was in his late 20s and their daughter was 3 years old, said that his death affected their daughter much more as a teenager than it did at the time. I’ve seen similar things from other people whom I knew personally. ---
