To continue the technical tangent (and further pissing off @Czarcasm since they apparently think we shouldn’t discuss this shit), converting an 8x57 Mauser to .30-06 or 7.62 NATO would need both changing the barrel and re-chambering. And, interestingly, also modifying the front receiver bridge if you’re converting to .30-06, which is why we can easily see whether a Mauser has been converted firstly to .30-06, or whether it was converted directly from 8x57 to 7.62 NATO). Converting from .30-06 to 7.62 NATO would need only re-chambering. Converting from whatever to .223/5.56 NATO would need both changing the barrel and re-chambering ---

I just was wondering because I had two 30-06s - a Japanese Howa with a polymer stock, and one of the last of the Springfields sold through the CMP. Every Mausers I’ve seen were original Kraut chambering. If they catch this guy, and he has a big yellow bruise on his shoulder, he’s cooked. ---

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it turns out to be great-grandpa’s rifle brought back from Germany as either a trophy or souvenir, converted to .30-06 because of difficulty getting 7.92x57 compared to Army surplus .30-06, and used off and on as a deer rifle for years. Bonus to the shooter is that such a weapon would be effectively untraceable if it’s been sitting around a house in Utah for 80 years. I mean, the man’s dead, even Trump’s FBI will probably find the shooter, and we may or may not understand a motive.
