Trump ally and conservative pundit Charlie Kirk shot at Utah event [now reported deceased, same date 10SEP2025]

It really depends on the firearm.
A civilian handgun? Yeah, a couple of feet or so, maybe more.
A military battle rifle? Where failure to eject is a really, really bad thing to happen in the middle of an engagement? You want strong ejection.
Having watched my share of the YouTube gun holy trinity ejection is very variable, up to 0 feet because the ejector throws the case straight up.

Why not just say “manual action”?

Eta: that should be “manual operation” actually.

Heh, just saw this headline:

" Ben Shapiro event at Reagan library in Simi Valley is canceled in aftermath of Charlie Kirk shooting"

Shapiro had been scheduled to appear Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to discuss his new book.

The announcement of the cancellation was made after Kirk was shot but before President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death in a social media post.

Just out of curiosity I asked chat GPT how to sight in a rifle for a 200 yrd shot with a 30 yrd drop, and got (what seemed to be) a fairly detailed, step by step guide that seemed (to this non shooter) to be simple to follow.
The upshot? For somebody halfway organised that has the ability to plan (as appears to be the case) to prepare and practise for this would seem to be a simple proposition…

Asking chatGPT for factual information that you’re not equipped to verify is basically the worst use of it. Unless you’re one of those that is likely to be driven insane and kill yourself.

I know I’m not the first in this thread to say it, but since it keeps coming up… 200 yards with a rifle is barely anything. I could hit center of mass with iron sights at 300 yards with an assault rifle, and I’m not all that great of a shot (I just barely managed to qualify “sharper shooter” which actually is only the middle grade between “marksman” and “expert”). 200 yards with a rifle actually meant for aimed shots, I might just be able to make a head or neck shot—with iron sights. Give me a scope (and a chance to practice with it for a few minutes) and I can’t imagine it being all that difficult of a shot.

This wasn’t even bulls-eying womp rats back home.

Anyone who has had any amount of training (target shooting, I mean) on a rifle… could probably make this shot. Same was true for Oswald on Kennedy (who, while moving, was moving down the line of sight, making it not that much more difficult).

No amount of Googling/AI questions will make you a good shooter.

It’s a skill, like any other, and requires practice. A lot of practice to be good at. Maybe Google/AI can give you some pointers but you still need to go to the range and practice…a lot…if you want to be good at it. This should not be a surprise to anyone and is not unique to shooting.

Especially when Googling “zeroing a rifle” will give you thousands of results.

Kirk was worse. Charlie M. had influence over a handful of acid heads and runaways, while Charlie K. had the ears of a whole lot of violence-prone, conformity-worshipping bigots and helped spread those bigots’ mind poison over a wider field. Charlie M. caused a dozen or so deaths (accounts vary), while Charlie K. shared and encouraged the viewpoint of those who would like to directly or indirectly cause hundreds of thousands of deaths and a great deal of oppression, repression, and suppression of the living (not that his ilk don’t already have a body count of their own).

What? The deceased’s whole public career was dedicated to making the lives of me, and many others like me, more Hellish and dangerous and repressed, so how the fuck am I supposed to feel? Sad for the children he won’t get a chance to raise into his hateful worldview? Sad for the widow who probably shares most of his ugly and murderous opinions, or the parents he probably learned them from? That man would’ve enjoyed seeing me dead, I can assure you. Any justified schadenfreude aside, the only thing I have to say about Charlie Kirk and his sordid public demise at this point is, “At least there’s one less of them now”.

My ferverent hope is that the shooter is one of three groups

  1. Somebody truely driven by “demons”, that got hold of a gun over the objection of others more rational in their social circle due to “2nd amendement rights”
  2. An ostensible right winger/Republican for whom Kirk’s positions are directly and immediately personal (eg: a family member was a victim in a school shooting) and they were taking (in their mind at least) revenge.
  3. A fan of his that wanted notoriety

Y’all know SuntanLotion is a troll, right?

ETA: And Norse (I see you typing, but I won’t see what you’ve typed…)

It depends on the type of bolt action. A Remington-type action throws the empty cartridge as soon as it clears the opening in the action. A Mauser-type action doesn’t eject the cartridge until the bolt hits the back stop. With those rifles, the shooter can stop and pick out the spent cartridge before it’s ejected.

If you reload your own ammo, the Remington-type is a PITA because you have to crawl around collecting the spent casings, while with the latter type you just pick out the spent casing and put it back into the ammo box.

Slide your left hand back from the forend, hold it over the opening and the action throws the brass right into your hand.

I saw this picture that the freaking WSJ of the “bullet casing with trans ideology” posted, and apparently it’s just the manufacturers markings………..

Holy fuck, that can not be an accident, I refuse to accept that anyone is that stupid.

So, I made this list of 20 incidents of right wing violence since 2014 if anyone needs a counter to the idiots that claim it’s one side only.

Feel free to add to it, I was listing by perpetrator and I couldn’t decide how to fit Jan 6th into the format, so I left if off for now.

  1. Jerad and Amanda Miller (2014 Las Vegas shooting)

  2. Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. (2014 Overland Park Jewish Community Center shooting)

  3. Dylann Roof (2015 Charleston Church shooting)

  4. Omar Mateen (2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting)

  5. James Alex Fields (2017 Charlottesville Unite The Right attack)

  6. Cesar Altieri Sayoc Jr. (2018 US mailbombing attempts)

  7. James Alex Fields (2018 murder of Heather Heyer at Charlottesville protest)

  8. Brenton Tarrant (2019 Christchurch, New Zealand shooting)

  9. John Earnest (2019 Poway Synagogue shooting)

  10. Patrick Crusius, (2019 El Paso shooting)

  11. Nathaniel Veltman (2021 Ontario truck attack)

  12. Hugo Jackson (2021, stabbing and attempted mass murder at a school in in Sweden)

  13. Roy Den Holleder (2020 murder of the son of Judge Ester Salas)

  14. Payton Gendron (2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting)

  15. Anderson Lee Aldrich (2022 Colorado Club Q shooting)

  16. Ryan Palmeter (2023 Jacksonville Dollar General shooting)

  17. David DePape (2024 attempted murder of Paul Pelosi)

  18. Cody Balmer (2025 arson at PA Governor Josh Shapiro’s home)

  19. Solomon Henderson (2025 Nashville shooting)

  20. Vance Luther Boelter (2025 murder of Mark and Melissa Hortman, attempted murder of John and Yvette Hoffman)

Agree with CMC: I’m having a hard time believing that anyone could be that stupid.

On the other hand, I’m sure that the Internet will be on fire tomorrow, with comments from people who do know better, and won’t be afraid to say so.

Just because I’m curious, how does one get “antifascist ideology” out of “21” and “9 x 19”?

Clearly because there is no 14 or 88 - like a real fascist casing would have stamped in.

Therefore, antifascist. The logic is unarguable.

While your third hand holds the rifle? Or are you assuming that this rifle has a biped mount?

That is also a picture of a 9x19mm Parabellum casing, not a .30-06 Springfield that was the reported chambering of the rifle used by the shooter. The ‘TRN’ headstamp indicates that it is of Turkish origin.

Stranger

I didn’t even notice that… and now my brain is broken and my face looks like Trump’s.
