I’ve seen a completely different picture of a bullet with supposed “Trantifa” (transgender + antifa) ideology inscribed on it. Which was again, just the manufacturer markings. It seems to be a conspiracy theory percolating through the right wing social media system right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the idea came from in the first place.
It is insanely irresponsible for police or any media source to classify a few vague letters and numbers as “trans” or “antifascist” ideology at a time when the fascists are just itching for some sort of target for violent retaliation. The sort of connections they are claimed to be making are q-anon hidden symbols level bullshit.
You gotta hand it to Trump’s doj - they’ve caught 10 out of the last 2 assassins.
I saw the actual blurb in the WSJ, and it did not include that photo. That was added by someone on X. The WSJ blurb also didn’t directly make any claims about what the casing said, and just quoted “an early bulletin circulated widely among law enforcement officials.”
Yeah, I think that’s “Kate Bush’s Husband’s” addition. I saw the same screenshot of the same Twitter post posted to a pretty far left Discord I’m on yesterday, but I’m pretty sure the person who posted it was joking. (I’m only “pretty” sure because young people on Discord tend to have at least 3 or 4 layers of irony going at all times).
Love it!
From NYT’s live updates:
If Trump told Fox they got the guy, and he was some sort of anti-fascist or minority, there’s no way Trump would sit on that information and not immediately start blabbing it to everyone. That suggests (although far from proves) he might be a right wing type.
He didn’t call in. He is live on-air with them. He couldn’t wait for an official announcement, of course. He wants the glory. Also, did you know he has solved everything? Everything.
I’ve seen a few posts on Facebook purporting to show two men who were standing right behind Kirk making some mysterious “hand signals” in the seconds before he was shot. No one says anything more than “this should be investigated,” but the implication seems to be that they were somehow signaling to the shooter.
I think some people are trying to vaguely suggest that the timing was not a coincidence.
I’d say the WSJ is solidly in the middle BUT its Op-Ed pages are weirdly super right-wing. Make of that what you will.
It’s difficult to come up with a more fitting tribute for a fallen man who was an ardent free speech advocate.
Oh. Wait…
I may be missing something here, but the person in the photo has no rifle. Did the person on film jumping off the building have one? If not, how did the rifle make it into the woods?
The reason for casing control is not so much about evidence control, but in not giving your position away by having a shiny casing flying through the air, catching the sun, pinging around just as everyone’s head is swiveling around to see where the shot came from.
A brass catcher would be equally effective, if you’re able to obtain a suitable one. That might not be easy if it’s a hastily conceived plan, or the rifle is nonstandard for whatever reason (maybe grandpa’s untraceable hand-me-down).
Nobody fucking cares. Respectfully.
I saw a “Hindustan Times” article talking about that (I think they collect internet conspiracies and put them out as articles sometimes? Although they seemed skeptical too) but it all seemed like horse crap.
Oh, I have no doubt it’s nonsense. I mean, the “hand signals” are that one guy adjusts his baseball cap, and the other crosses his arms. Clearly a secret message!
But it’s an idea that’s out there.
Oh shut the fuck up. It cited media bias organizations and what they rated WSJ as. It was a perfectly good use of AI to quickly verify something and it’s hardly any different than if I posted a citation that stated the same basic fact. It was relevant to the discussion. You apparently just have a bug up your ass so if anyone says the word chatgpt you have to come in and try to shame them.
All I said was that the WSJ was reasonably mainstream reality-based media so you wouldn’t expect the absolutely insane and irresponsible reporting about the “trans and antifascist ideology” based on nothing. It’s so fucking stupid to jump down my throat about it. Oh, they have some right wing op eds, so of course they’re completely delusional about reality and get people to try to attack trans people all the fucking time! Only a fool could think the WSJ would ever tell the truth! Fuck off with that shit.
It sounds like they were just reporting what the police were saying so the police may be the irresponsible ones here, or they may actually have “transgender and antifascists ideology” that they haven’t shared with anyone.
