Nonsense. No state can make abortion illegal because of federal action by the SCOTUS. There are lots of things that states can do to chip around the margins, but there is no way to stop abortions in the US at the state level.

Even getting rid of _Roe_ would not stop most abortions in the US, as most states would still allow it. We’d need a new SCOTUS ruling giving “personhood” status to fertilized human ova followed by law making abortion illegal, or a constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion.

This is why I honestly think that Trump’s ego got him into this, and I honestly don’t think he expected to become the nominee. Not that he wanted to dally into politics just to increase his brand (although I’ve no doubt that’s part of it), but it’s like the Four Yorkshiremen sketch, and someone says “Prove it!” when the claim about living in a hole with a piece of twig comes up.

In another thread, **CarnalK** said

> I am a little tired of this theory . I don’t know how serious he is/was about this whole thing but there just is no way it was a stunt to push his brand. If that was his objective he would never have been so divisive. He could easily have gone off on the “rigged system”, “they’re giving away our jobs” and “Make America Great Again” without all the Mexican/Muslim/etc shit.

and there’s a point there. It’s obvious (as another poster said) Trump’s out of his depth. But there is the possibility, however slim, that he began all this simply as an attention whore, and the game got away from him, and now he’s in too deep to quit.

I maintain that for better or worse, the GOP got exactly what they wanted all these years: someone from the outside, who won’t pander to special interests, who’ll stand up _for_ “them” (i.e., disaffected white middle-aged, middle class voters), and stand up _against_ “them” (i.e., minorities who come in and take our best jobs).

This is a classic example of being careful of what you wish for.

For both the GOP as a whole, and for Trump.

If you start with the assumption that Trump doesn’t really want to be president, then everything that happens makes a lot more sense.

Is there any objective evidence that he truly _does_ want to be president? I may be wrong, but I don’t see any.

ETA: That’s not a dig at **John Mace** , by the way. Just to be clear.

Your second point is true, but some states have so limited abortion, that they have _almost_ effectively banned it.

_Trompe l’oeil_ (French: “fools the eye”) is a style of painting that plays with perspective to make the viewer think they are seeing a real object rather than a painted image.

Trump does not want to be president, and doesn’t plan on actually doing much if he wins. That’s why he was offering the “most powerful vicepresidency in history”. He DOES want to win though, because in his mind winning is everything. He doesn’t want the job, but he sure as hell isn’t going to try to purposely lose.

If by “objective evidence” you mean someone who purportedly heard Trump say he didn’t actually want to be president, no. I’ve just always been suspicious that he does, and his behavior is much more understandable if we assume he doesn’t.

He may want to win the presidency, but that doesn’t mean he wants to be president. That is, do the actual job as opposed to claiming the title. He’s the proverbial dog chasing the car.

He is fertilizing fascism on an almost daily basis, pushing the boundaries with so many outrageous lies that people can no longer distinguish between truth and fiction, and erasing the boundaries of what passes for acceptable conduct in American political discourse. This is a genie that is hard to put back in the bottle, particularly when someone sees how successful a political novice has been in utilizing to his advantage. Millions of us, even those of us who abhor his comments, are being conditioned to meet these behaviors with passivity. “Meh, it’s just Trump being a nut again.” Yes, but what we’re now conditioned to accept has changed. A democratic society needs the ability to feel outraged. That is being systematically destroyed on an almost daily basis, and we’re in serious danger because of it.

Re: the whole “sarcasm” thing - it v reminds me of a child i know. He went through a period of time where he would lie balls faced to you amd when called on it, say something like "I was being SARCASTIC! "

i would ask a question, like is your seatbelt buckled? He would say yes. I would look and nope, not buckled. Or I’d ask him if he had brushed his teeth - same thing. Or if he gotten a snack.

He grew out of this confusion between sarcasm amd lying; It’s rather too late for Trump.
