Technically, the Speaker of the House doesn’t have to be a member of Congress. All you need is a majority of the House to vote for you. Trump doesn’t need to bother with a campaign, he can just tell House Republicans that he’s ready to be their Speaker now if they take back the chamber and dare them to vote for someone else.

It goes without saying that he is not the least bit interested in actually being a congressman, but he could be interested in leading an impeachment. But the chances of 67 senate seats is nil. Actually, he could run in any district in Florida; there is no requirement he live in his district.

Go for it, Tan the Conman! There’s absolutely no way you’ll be able to behave as decently as even your mouthpiece lunatice MTG while in Congress. That means you won’t be on any committees and thus will have no power. The benefit here is that the pool of Republicans in office to serve on committees will continue to dwindle. There’s no way that’s not a good thing for democracy in general and America specifically.

It really could be a legitimate worry, as the Speaker has a lot of power by nature of deciding what laws can be heard. It could whip people back in line.

However, I don’t really think Trump has it in him to do the work that would be necessary to pull it off. Even the preliminary work would not be his beloved rallies, but actually involve a lot more maneuvering.

And I don’t think Republicans actually want him to actually have power. They want use him to bring in the base, but they want him more as a figurehead, not actually near the levers of power. Sure, he has some devoted followers, but most are trying to use him.

Furthermore, while the GOP mostly supports his “policies” (if you can call it that), they weren’t nearly so on board with him running again. Or, at least, that’s what happened at CPAC.

That said, it is something to watch for. Trump could win in Florida, and the GOP would then kinda feel compelled to go along with his plan lest they lose their base. So we need to be on the lookout.

With Trump, never say never.

The problem is Trump is the exemplar of “doesn’t play well with others”. In his mind, other people only exist to serve his needs.

Even if the Republicans win majorities in both halves of Congress and decide to impeach Biden and Harris, why are they going to hand the Speakership or the Presidency to Trump? What’s he ever done for the Republicans? He cost them to the 2020 election and he’s working on costing them the 2024 election. As far as the Republican party is concerned, the best thing Trump could do is have a fatal heart attack.

Moreover, he’d be a lame duck the second he was elected, as he clearly intends to keep pretending he’s running for president in '24.

This is Trump we’re talking about. Assuming he’s aware of the 22nd Amendment, he probably thinks he can veto it or override it with an executive order.

I wasn’t referring to the 22nd. I was referring to the fact that if he were elected to Congress in 2022, it would immediately be evident that he wouldn’t be running for reelection to that office in 2024.

Okay, I see what you’re saying. But I think that’s a given in this scenario. Trump wouldn’t even pretend he has any interest in serving in Congress; he would openly say he was just using the office as a stepping stone back to the presidency.

Again, this is Trump we’re talking about. He would be saying how Congress is for losers while expecting the members of Congress to elect him Speaker of the House and impeach the President and Vice President on his behalf.

> I’m guessing that he would first have to admit that he’s _not_ really president. I don’t see that happening.

Should these events come to pass, you will find that he absolutely can (and will) run for office while declaring that he is still president. He will run, he will be appointed Speaker, he will claim he’s the first person ever to dually hold the Presidency and Speakership. He will hold rallies featuring the Presidential seal, as if he were still President, and nobody will do anything but cluck their tongues. Republicans will chuckle and say we shouldn’t take him literally, and then they will literally try to award him as much Presidential power as they are able.

Stop trying to apply logic to Trumpworld.

Having said that, I don’t think House Representative is Trump’s style. He’ll have understood by now that the Senate is the elected office that _really_ holds power and job security in this country. He’ll want to be Mitch McConnell. Perhaps someone persuades Rubio that this is finally his year to be President, and he resigns, and Trump gets his seat. The King of Florida Men will reign until he dies, and the joy and festivities surrounding his funeral will be brutally interrupted by the announcement that his seat will be going to Ivanka, whose tenure will be longer than the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

In this way, the bench of Republican presidential hopefuls can safely get their ambitions back on track without worrying that the base will construe it as an act of regicide.

The stakes are high, folks. Vote.

I did not know this, but this statement is correct.

So the 2nd person in line for the presidency (after the Vice-President) does not have to be an elected official. Interesting.

(Yes, I know that the cabinet members are next in line after the President Pro Tem of the Senate.)
