The 4th ingredient in Diet Coke is phosphoric acid. I don’t think that’s a secret. Every cola and most soft drinks in general have some form of acid in them. Lemon juice is also corrosive, that doesn’t mean I won’t eat anything with lemon in it. ---

It’s not because it’s toxic to human health in moderate amounts (contrary to what woo-pushers would insist) but because diet cola doesn’t leave sticky residue (unlike the sugary stuff), and the acid is strong enough to dissolve a lot of things without harming concrete. It’s good in a pinch if you don’t have access to something better. ---

When i was a kid, i was once given coca cola syrup as a medicine, for an upset stomach, maybe. (I don’t recall for sure.) I doubt that’s good medical practice, but other than it having a strong flavor, i don’t recall any problems. I think the corrosiveness is well within the range your stomach is designed to handle. ---

The problem with demonstrations like that is that we are not chunks of iron; human flesh reacts entirely differently to all sorts of things than iron does. Salt water rusts iron fast, but iron will ignore temperatures that would cook a human easily. Heck, _blood_ is highly corrosive to iron, so by the “nail test” we’re all going to dissolve into puddles any moment now. ---

When I was a kid, the standard Mom’s remedy for an upset stomach was flat Coca Cola. Citric acid is very, very commonly used in the aquarium hobby for cleaning aquarium parts. Mainly because vinegar has a bad habit of eating plastic and damaging seals, which allows water in places you don’t want water, which breaks expensive equipment and allows rust into your tank water. Also, whenever someone mentions the tooth or nail or egg or whatever in soda for a week, my first thought is usually 'well, it’s a good thing I don’t leave soda in my mouth for a week". ---

Funny enough, Coca-Cola was invented by a [colonel from the Confederate army who had a medical degree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stith_Pemberton) as he was seeking an alternative to morphine (which he had become addicted to himself as a result of being treated with it in the war while recovering from a sword wound). He introduced the kola nut as a source of caffeine in hopes of finding something less addictive that could help with pain treatment. His first concoction was alcoholic, but the non-alcoholic version eventually became what we know today as Coca-Cola, and became the prototype for other cola drinks to follow. So, it seems appropriate for people to use it as a form of medical relief, even if it never fulfilled its original purpose. ---
