This just backs up my theory that Trump supporters want to believe in myth. John Dillinger, Jesse James, Bonnie and Clyde all had popular appeal despite them being murderers and robbers. Despite Trump’s numerous sins and flaws, his people can’t really justify their support for him other than he’s what they wish him to be. They want to believe he’s on their side and will beat up the DC establishment. They want to believe in QAnon because it’s modern day fairy tales. They want to live their lives without some sort of liberal disapproval forcing them to change their values. They don’t want to give up their power to minorities. ---

If you want one where Trump is doing the best job ever and is only prevented from making paradise on earth by the socialist Democratic party and the deep state (which is so pervasive as to infiltrate even his own staff picks) then you can find news sources that will construct this reality for you. ---

Maybe earlier. Maybe in 2016. But when it’s four years of this, it has descended from mythologizing to a more routine abuse dynamic - ‘If I can get Daddy mad at Jessica, he won’t be mean to me.’ Is it no surprise that the dominant personality trait of those still supporting him is this reflexive victimization? Imagine the psychology of one who gets abused by his President the way Trump abuses all of us with his constant lies and divisiness, and then comes to places where they can be abused some more, all in support of the alpha abuser. It’s actually not that uncommon - this dynamic is often seen in abusive households and organizations. Eeneems, you may wish to see someone. You’re not just a glutton for punishment, you’re someone wishing to be harmed emotionally. This is not good. ---

It should also be pointed out that the characterization of the Straight dope (even the liberal side) as a purely partisan that will ignore facts to attack Trump on anything and defend Biden on anything is also demonstrably false. See this [thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/trump-probably-committed-voter-fraud/923461/40) for example in which many Trump hating liberals reject the notion of the OP and defend Trump against accusations of voter fraud. For the most part the SD follows the facts, its just that the facts clearly indicate that Trump is an incompetent narcissistic sociopath and pathological liar. ---

I know your words and what they say about you. And your words are reflective of someone suffering depression but yet still needs to fight for a man lying to him so badly that this… abuser… needs this defense. Analogizing with TV tropes, think of a wife having to wear sunglasses at spotty times throughout the year. She, too, will get tired. She, too, will turn on those who advise her to leave him, to leave the situation, to _repudiate_ the decision she made to marry her abuser. She will say ‘Betty, what about that time Tom got drunk and hit on Cheryl?’ if Betty should express concern. Just like your response to me.
