The President is saying, through his actions and words, that the rules, the laws, the Constitution don’t matter.
The President may know very little about the Constitution. He may be ignorant as hell. What he’s saying is, he doesn’t give a shit. And he’s daring people to stop him. And so far, nobody has.
This is serious. We now have a sitting president who is blatantly challenging the validity of the Constitution.
I’m quite aware of that. However, as he has yet to actually DO anything with the 14th amendment, of course nobody has done anything. You can’t stop something that hasn’t happened in the first place. So far it’s just talk. Constitutional scholars have all stated he won’t be able to.
It’s not just talk. If a president can win an election by saying “fuck the Constitution”…believe me, that is not just talk. That is the end of everything. The Supreme Court, the Congress, the Presidency…nothing is more powerful than having a democratic result that authorizes authoritarianism.
I think that the mid-term elections will produce divided results. I’m not worried about the outcome of this week’s elections. It’s going forward that matters. What happens in 2020? That election is going to be a referendum on democracy.
