> True. There are two distinct flavors of immigration that many Leave-voters were worried about. For brevity, we can call them “Syrians” and “Poles.” The imagined and real effects of leaving the EU vary; but my larger point was that many Leavers assumed the UK has less control over its own immigration (in policy and in practice) than it actually has.

I suspect the community that they were most worried about (and that worries me most, I would have voted Leave if I was a British citizen) are neither of those, it’s the South Asian communities who were responsible for stuff like this:

> **[Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotherham_child_sexual_exploitation_scandal)**
>
> The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal consists of the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England from the late 1980s until 2013 and the failure of local authorities to act on reports of the abuse throughout most of that period. Researcher Angie Heal, who was hired by local officials and warned them about child exploitation occurring between 2002 and 2007, has since described it as the "biggest child protection scandal in The...

Anyway, regarding the EU, it’s true that Britain is not part of the Schengen area and that the communities that cause the most social problems were brought over in the 1950s and have nothing to do directly with the EU. That being said, I think voting Leave was at least in part a symbolic vote against the _ideas_ of mass immigration, multiculturalism, dilution of English ethnicity, Islam, etc., rather than a vote for or against distinct policy measures.

I agree that they are stupid, and willfully ignorant. The kind of people who can’t see that forcing someone to stand while a nationalistic theme song plays “because America” is in direct opposition to the freedom they are fighting for. The kind of people who can’t be bothered to fact-check the crap they hear him say.

> As I see it - and I’m not an American citizen so have no vote - they don’t particularly want Trump because he’s Trump but because he’s a protest vote against The System which has failed them so badly. They see both the Republicans and the Democrats as part of the problem. They particularly see the liberal city elites - and that includes most Dopers - as the problem. People working in their nice shiny offices, people working in Washington, far removed from the ‘real world’. They see idiots wanting ‘safe spaces’. They don’t care if it doesn’t turn out well; as they see it, they have nothing to lose…
> If Trump wins it will be because you liberal American elites are so busy pushing your own agendas you fail to appreciate their issues or even acknowledge that they have issues.

Yes, they want to be seen and heard, and Trump says he sees and hears them. He acknowledges the working class, and makes promises that many of us see right through. His words are bullshit and he not only doesn’t give a shit about them, he doesn’t have a clue what their world is like. Why, oh why, don’t they get that? He’s not better than anyone currently in Washington who doesn’t give a shit.

> First, Trump was not my first choice. But why I’m voting for him. Reason #1: I find Hillary evil, Bill was OK, but in my opinion she represents everything wrong with the political system and our culture today. Don’t ask me to go into it, not in the mood to either change this topic or argue. Reason #2: Trump pisses off people I want to piss off. Reason #3: While I believe few of the things Trump promises to do, looking back into his history for years if not decades, Trump was always complained about our lousy trade deals. So I kind of think he may be sincere on this one issue. Reason #4: To paraphrase the Joker “This country needs an enema.” Reason # 5: Despite what I’ve said in my first 4 reasons, it probably doesn’t matter in the long run who win. Destiny is kind of like an avalanche, nothing much effects it.

Not dragging you into an argument but here’s my 2 cents:

1. That doesn’t make Trump any better.
2. 4 years of leading this country is not the time or place for pissing people off. You want to piss someone off, fine, but this isn’t the venue for petty spiteful “in your face!” decision making.
3. He might be sincere on one issue, so let’s vote him in for all the issues. Um, no.
4. I disagree.
5. For once in our lives, it does matter. You need someone somewhat rational and level headed who is going to at least try to reason his or her way through decisions before flying off the handle. I don’t trust him for one minute with that level of decision making, so almost anyone else would be better.

Someone said today on CNN that she was voting for Trump because Hillary had had a chance and made mistakes. I’ve heard this before and I can see how some people buy it. It’s wrong and weak as hell, but I see how it makes sense to them.
As SoS and Senator, Clinton was in favor of invading Iraq. She allowed the deaths in Benghazi\*. She deleted all those emails\*. She took Foundation money from people seeking favors in return\*. They see Clinton’s time at State as a series of mistakes.
On the other hand, Trump has absolutely no political history, so he’s never done anything to put the country in peril. He has never taken us into a war situation, has never let a soldier die, has never voted against his constituents’ views, and has never let them down.
Therefore, why not vote for the guy who has no history of political failure or screwing over the voters?
\*Just repeating the popular catchphrases here, you don’t need to convince me…

> I agree that that’s part of it. The trouble is, it’s people like Trump who broke the system in the first place. Supposing you’re right that the liberal elites and the salt-of-the-earth types have different visions for America. Well, we’re all Americans, and the way “the system” is supposed to work is that both sides come together, figure out what they have to have and what they can let go, take the best of both worlds, compromise, and move on. And that system worked for a couple hundred years and made us the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth. That system broke when one side decided that the other was so wrong that even compromise was unacceptable.
>
> Trump, win or lose, will not fix the system; he will take the broken pieces of it and break them some more. His supporters will then look for someone even worse.

My belief is that it’s these idiot voters who broke the system by voting for idiot Republican representatives and senators that do nothing beneficial for the country. The did it in 1994 and again in 2010. Imagine if 2010 had been a Democratic wave instead of a Republican one. Picture a Senate with Democrats holding 65 or even 70 seats and a House where the Democrats hold a 50 or 60 seat majority. Imagine that lead holding through to today. I bet the lives of the vast majority of Trump supporters would be better in this alternative scenario than they are today. It’s just that those voters are too idiotic to realize that the problem is not Obama or Clinton or Pelosi or Reid or a liberal SCOTUS or any other of their imaginary bogeymen. The problem is that they were idiots and voted obstructionist Republicans into office and they’re too stupid to realize that this is the problem.

The presidential race has become a magician’s misdirection - a two-year popularity contest to elect a person who actually has fairly little influence of the day-to-day lives of Americans (or at best a small fraction of what their state and local officials have). Meantime, congressional incumbents get returned out of habit and continue to serve the interests of their biggest clients/donors.

Yes. They voted for people while they were angry and were disapointed, so now they’re voting for someone while they’re furious and expecting him to be better.

> It’s not a “phantom specter”, it’s a real force in American history, society, and culture. Thankfully it’s not the dominant force any more, and it’s been dying a long and very slow death, but Trump is empowering it. He could use the same brutal language to describe David Duke and various other white supremacists who have supported him as he has to describe Obama, Hillary, and various others, but all he’ll offer are tepid disavowals. David Duke almost became governor of a state just 25 years ago or so – was that a fluke? Have times really changed that much since the early 90s in terms of how his former supporters feel about black people? Considering all the polls showing Trump supporters’ belief in birtherism, negative feelings for black people, negative feelings for other minorities, and the like, I think it’s still, unfortunately, a significant force. We should do everything we can to continue its decline, and Trump’s election would reverse this progress.

“We should line 'em up and shoot 'em down.”

Haven’t heard that since the 1960’s, Andy.

David Duke? Why do we only hear that name 'round election time when the Dems trot it out? How many blacks has he or these “white supremacists” killed in the past 25 years?

You people are confusing the attitude of many white Republicans (who were raised with morals, values, and standards) of “people should assimilate and become productive members of society” with “racism”.

So, only white republicans have morals, values, and standards? Interesting. I’m curious to hear why you think they don’t win every election if they are the only ones with those qualities?

I think a safer bet is that Americans seem to have an unending fascination with “wealth” and with “celebrity”. Trump brings the worst of both worlds, along with a (un)healthy dose of narcissism.

Yep, things have improved from mass slavery, daily rapes, brutality, and depradation, to segregation and lynching and general oppression and second-class citizenhood, to redlining and unequal treatment in the justice system, to poorer public services and infrastructure and society-wide negative stereotypes. Now is much, much better than the past. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t still a lot of problems, and a lot of assholes.

I haven’t heard his name in any election since his own campaigns in the 90s (I’m a Louisiana boy, so we heard his name a lot). But there’s something about Trump that’s brought him back to the forefront, and Trump has refused to rhetorically burn him down when he’s so gleefully used terrible descriptors and insults for various Democrats and Republicans who don’t like him.

No we’re not. About half of Republicans in Mississippi think interracial marriage should be illegal. Big chunks of Trump supporters agree, and even bigger chunks think Obama was born in another country (despite there being no evidence). Big chunks of Trump supporters think black people are lazier and less intelligent than whites. The Trump Ohio campaign woman who recently resigned because she said that there was no racism until Obama was elected is emblematic – I don’t know if all these people are absolutely horrible and evil, but they sure are ignorant, and ignorance, as opposed to horribleness and evilness, was the driver of most of the white supremacist-related horrible things in American history.

The Dylan Roofs of the country are bad enough, but what’s done the most harm to America are the millions more folks that believed that MLK Jr or other black folks who dared speak up were unAmerican, communist, or insert-your-epithet-here for daring to challenge the status quo.

Compared to Trump? Tough call. But, yeah, probably. Are you saying you’d prefer a President Trump over a President Arpaio?

I mean, (a) it’d be a which-is-marginally-less-bad situation, and (b) it seems to be irrelevant, since I don’t plan on voting for either of 'em. Again, _is any of that as bad as Trump?_ I’m figuring that a President Christie or a President Pence would be less bad than a President Trump, for the same reason: President Trump would have the same drawbacks as either, _plus_ the whole angle of not knowing what the hell is going to come out of his mouth next.

Well, I’m telling you that they strike me as less bad than Trump – and, I added, not to the point where I’d pick any of them over Hillary Clinton, but to the point where I’d pick any of them over Donald Trump. The point was that **all** of them are bad, including Trump. Nowhere do I say that you should prefer one or the other; remember, Trump has them joined to his hip. It is a package deal as that hopeless group of reprobates had enough time to distance from Trump and vice-versa.

And the more I see that attitude of ignoring what supporters and staffers are doing, the more I see how principled many Republicans were in the past.
McCain Tells Crowd Obama is Not Arab
You don’t see that with Trump, nor his personnel, and his recent acknowledgement that Obama was born in the USA has been admitted to be only a political move, as in a lie by Trump himself and Joe Arpaio is continuing to waste taxpayers money on that stupid and racist effort.

The point is clear to me. If Trump wins he and his staffers will make sure that there will be no progress, but regression, [recession](http://money.cnn.com/2016/03/03/news/economy/donald-trump-economy/) and aggression.

Wait…that is not what I heard that some “smart people are saying”! 🙂

Hey, that’s your position, and you’re welcome to it – but, again, I figure that Trump is _worse_ than Pence or Christie, because he seems to share any drawback you can name with them, _plus_ he sure seems to have the “dangerously unstable” thing going on.

Do you think Pence and Christie are as unstable as Trump?

Again, they decided to become the peas in his pod, and vice versa.

It is like Obi-wan could say; who is the most unstable, the one who is or the one who follows him?
