Now that it’s aired, we can safely award this option the victory. Turns out, who’da thunk it, Trump is a thoughtless weakling who thinks run of the mill questions are tough questions. Obama’s response was like something out of his Correspondents’ Dinner Whoop ass of Trump.

Is there ANYONE here who can defend the president? Please?

In all honesty, there are several things Trump has done as president that I like, and they make me want to vote for him. I will not go off-topic to discuss them, because as things stand now, no matter how much I might want to vote for him, I am honestly afraid for his mental health. I really wonder whether he can tell the difference between truth and falsehood, and that giant book of Not His Health Plan is just one example.

So if there are any Trump supporters out there who would like to explain why that book should not bother me, PLEASE do so, either here or in another thread.

advTHANKSance

I’d be really curious to know -
what has Trump done that you like?
It would be good for the specific policy or EO please

AFAICT, it’s pretty clear that he’s never had any particular interest in, or awareness of, the difference between truth and falsehood. As [this July 2019 Atlantic article noted](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/07/on-trumps-bullshit/593062/),

> [@](#):
>
> President Donald Trump’s penchant for out-and-out deception—lies, in common parlance, and as more and more observers are willing to label them—has meant that another of his tendencies has been eclipsed: the tendency to bluff blithely and obviously falsely. […]
>
> The philosopher Harry Frankfurt offers an earthy, useful description of this mode of Trump speech [in his essay _On Bullshit_](http://www2.csudh.edu/ccauthen/576f12/frankfurt__harry_-_on_bullshit.pdf):
>
> > [@](#):
> >
> > He is neither on the side of the true nor on the side of the false. His eye is not on the facts at all, as the eyes of the honest man and of the liar are, except insofar as they may be pertinent to his interest in getting away with what he says. He does not care whether the things he says describe reality correctly. He just picks them out, or makes them up, to suit his purpose.
>
> Consider Trump’s [press conference in Osaka, Japan](https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-press-conference-osaka-japan/), on Saturday. A reporter asked Trump about a [heated exchange between the Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/06/joe-biden-vs-kamala-harris-bussing-and-race-issues/592912/) at last week’s debate on the topic of school integration: “Where do you stand on that issue of federally mandated busing?” Trump first graded the debate on style, then added, “And as far as that, I will tell you in about four weeks, because we’re coming out with certain policy that’s going to be very interesting and very surprising, I think, to a lot of people.” […]
>
> Two things are clear: First, Trump has no idea what he is talking about. Second, Trump will not have a plan for busing, whether in four weeks or in two months. It’s not that he didn’t watch the debate […] but for the most part, he betrays no grasp of the complicated issue of busing. If he did, he wouldn’t be promising a plan, because it’s almost impossible to imagine any federal plan that would be in keeping with this political ideology. […]
>
> It is not merely that Trump is ignorant of issues about which one expects the president of the United States to be at least somewhat literate—though that is clearly the case. By promising a plan in four weeks […] Trump is attempting to hide his ignorance in the face of questions he does not understand.
>
> The bigger problem is that Trump’s answer is obviously false, Trump knows that it’s obviously false, and he doesn’t care. (“It relates to everything we’re doing,” is one of Trump’s tells, a claim that is both so grandiose and so lazy as to reveal what’s actually happening.) This is what makes it “bullshit,” in Frankfurt’s sense, rather than simply lying. He is just making things up to suit his purpose.

It’s true that we’ll never have a President (or any other poltician) who unwaveringly tells the exact truth at all times. But if you think it’s important for a President to at least be able to recognize, and care about, the difference between truth and falsehood, then you definitely should not be voting for Trump.

I think it’s like the traditional wristwatch being broken - but still telling the correct time twice a day… 🙂

For me, there have been rare time I’ve agreed with him, but it’s “he’s right, but for all the wrong reasons…”. And then the way he attempts to address the issues doubles down on the wrongness. I have felt that previous administrations have refused to confront China other than repeated ‘oh my’ statements, especially on their record of humanitarian issues, trade practices and patent infringement. But TARIFFS? This was the best option he could have come up with?
Another issue that he’s correct on, but still in the wrong way is the health care system. With the piecemeal rolebacks, presidential drama, and withdrawl of many insurance companies from various ‘unprofitable’ markets, it should be replaced with a more comprehensive plan. Which is something he promised, but never has, and probably never was going to deliver. Something like, oh, Medicare for all.

So yeah, I can agree with him on a few issues, but he then does it ass-backwards, and from utterly impure motives.

I’ve said for years he sounds like a fifth-grader in front of the class giving a report on a book he hasn’t read.

So, essentially, you agree with his platitudes. Unfortunately, that’s all he has, and in the cases you mention, they are essentially no different from anyone else’s platitudes.

“We want good healthcare, that costs less, covers more people, and protects people with pre-existing conditions!” Woohoo, great, find me anyone who would publicly disagree with that sentiment.

As the old saying goes, the Devil is in the details. How will you go about accomplishing all that? That’s the thing you should be looking at, and it’s clear that, on the details, you fundamentally disagree with him, at least so far as anyone can actually determine what his details might be.

So yeah, I guess the thing that I “like” about Trump is that he’s broken enough stuff badly enough that it needs to actually be fixed, and not just patched as it has been in the past.

That’s not really a ringing endorsement, any more than burning down your house because your kitchen sink is leaking is a valid home improvement model.

He’s so fucking stupid that he thinks that when he imposes tariffs on China, that China writes checks out to the US Treasury. He doesn’t have a clue as to who pays for the tariffs he imposes.

As to the original question, “Does he have something?” Yes he does- severe mental impairment bordering on psychosis.

</div>

I guess the thing I “like” most about Trump is that’s he’s more of a con artist than he is an actual corrupt politician.
I don’t think he’s actually big on “quid pro quo“. He loves his quid, he’ll promise anything to get that quid, but that not a lot of evidence that he’s ever actually upheld his end of the bargain, or even that he understands that he’s expected to. Once he gets his quid you’ll never see your quo.

His buddy Elliott Broidy took years out of his life to raise money for Trump and the RNC, bringing in hundreds of millions for him. Then, once Trump was in office, he became an influence peddler. He took millions from a foreign client in exchange for Trump agreeing to play a round of golf with the guy. **ONE** golf game. He couldn’t get Trump to do it, and got indicted over the deal.

Or Michael Cohen. Cohen mortgaged his home to pay off a porn star for Trump, and he couldn’t get Trump to pay him back. After being stiffed several times, Trump eventually “repaid” him by giving him a contract for legal services but what Cohen revealed in his book was that he was expected to actually perform said legal services.

Or the infamous Trump Tower meeting, which fell apart when the Russians started talking about Magnitsky. They just couldn’t understand why the Russians were talking about that. That was the quo, dumbass. That was the part of the meeting where they tell you what they want in exchange for what you want, ace negotiators.

So, I think if Trump actually possessed an “honor among thieves” mentality we’d be in a lot worse shape. Trump would’ve killed the Magnitsky Act and turned Bill Browder and Michael McFaul over to Russia to be murdered. China would probably have the cloud service contract for the US government.

If Trump wasn’t a shitty gangster as well as a shitty person, he would’ve done a lot more damage than he’s done.

</div>

I wasn’t endorsing him, I was pointing out that every once in a while (by my metaphor roughly 1/720 or 1/43200 of the time) he did something I like, in this case pointing out problems with existing systems and relations - and I carefully stated that even when he did, it was for the _wrong_ reasons, and his responses were normally _worse_ than the existing issues.

Not that this is much credit even then, as these aren’t _unique_ insights he has had, they’re something that have been pointed out by much more articulate speakers than Trump. And his actions have been to complain, rather than take effective action. So yeah, I’m damning him as hard as I can with faint praise.

Identifying the issues in this country – even just the issues as one party sees them – is no harder then the ‘cognitive function’ test that Trump ‘aced.’

Wisdom, discernment, humility, temperament, and experience point one toward truly appropriate solutions.
