I’m confused. Don’t want to put words in your mouth, but you seem to be saying that there should be NO investigation. That the truth is already so obvious, that an investigation is not needed. Are you in agreement with Mr. Trump when he said that no politician in history has been treated “more unfairly than him"?

I don’t understand this remark. What do you suggest instead?

My gut feeling is, he makes it to 2020, then “pulls an LBJ” and announces that he’s not running for re-election. As things stand right now, he has about as much chance of re-election as Jimmy Carter did - speaking of whom, IIRC, he was lucky to beat Ted Kennedy for the nomination in 1980.

What made you think he ever _wanted_ two terms ? One is enough to set up his family to join the Roosevelts, the Kennedys, and the Clintons; and he’ll be 79 in 2025, wanting to enjoy his golden years.

I dont believe that’s how it works (or should work) - he impeded the investigation - thats obstruciton - justice may (or may not) equal charges or finding of wrongdoing -it could also be being cleared of said.

I don’t think he’ll resign. In a fit of pique, he will stop showing up for work. It will be two weeks before anyone notices.

“Hey, hasn’t it been awfully quiet around here the last few days?”

I just don’t see Trump resigning unless one of two things happens:

1. Democrats take control of the congress in a massive route in next year’s elections, in which case the few remaining Republican survivors would be compelled to going along with Democratic-led impeachment. At the moment this scenario seems highly unlikely.

2. Republicans, exasperated with the White House carnival, realizes that they can’t get anything done in spite of having what seemed like a dream set-up in January: complete control of Congress, the White House, and the legislative agenda in Washington. As long as there’s a new bombshell that Hill repubs have to respond to, they can’t really spend much time talking up their tax reform, AHCA, and other deregulation. Republicans then basically threaten to have a Constitutional coup via the 25th Amendment. They’d need to be reasonably sure that Trumplandians would go apeshit on them though. I think his poll #s need to be down into the very low 30s for that one.

You are assuming he won’t resign unless threatened with impeachment. I agree that impeachment itself will take more than a mere piling up of evidence of wrongdoing.
I’m proposing he won’t wait anywhere near that long. I don’t think he understands much about the rule of law or what impeachment means, anyway. He’s always used massive amounts of money and sheer bullying to get his way in life.

But he hates and fears “losing” more than death itself. When every day is just another day of being thwarted, insulted, mocked, and news of more and more defections and distancings, he’s going to stop thinking about anything but getting out. He isn’t the kind of person who gamely fights on against losing odds. He believes in nothing.

I still think he’s going to quit, as ungraciously as it’s possible to do.

Vox has a good rundown on what are the most likely things that have pinned the radar of the FBI.

> The FBI investigation into Flynn hasn’t leaked a ton, so we can’t be 100 percent sure. Nonetheless, we know about roughly three allegations of wrongdoing that Flynn is either for sure or possibly wrapped up in: lying about payments from foreign governments, the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and lying about his meetings with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Any one of these could potentially get Flynn into hot water with the FBI.

As others noted, that should had been enough to keep anyone in legal danger away from the guy, but Trump (and Pence as it is beginning to look like) is one that still likes to join conniving convicted guys to the hip (like Joe Arpaio), and the troubles the appearance of colluding or tampering with guys under investigation that will cause him, do not enter his child mind.

> Trump Told Flynn To ‘Stay Strong’ — After His Lawyers Told Him Not To
>
> Donald Trump’s lawyers have repeatedly warned him not to contact his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who resigned in February after revelations that he lied about conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, and who remains under investigation by congressional committees, the FBI, and a federal grand jury. The attorneys reportedly expressed fears that any contact with Flynn could look like witness tampering or coordination.
>
> It appears the President did not heed their advice.
>
> Yahoo News reported Thursday that Flynn announced at a dinner in late April: “I just got a message from the president to stay strong.” It is not yet known if the message was a phone call, e-mail, text message or other form of communication.
>
> The revelation comes just days after the New York Times revealed that Trump asked then-FBI Director James Comey to drop his investigation of Flynn, and emerging reports that Flynn intervened to stop a military operation against ISIS without revealing that he was on the payroll of the Turkish government, who opposed the strike. Other reports revealed that Flynn failed to properly register as a foreign agent, and failed to report more than a million dollars in income from Russian and Turkish sources.

Maybe ‘stay strong’ is a lightly veiled threat. Flynn has not yet complied with any of the subpoenas. He only has a couple more days to do so.

And tell us we won’t have Donald Trump to kick around anymore?

Wonder if he would blame his wife - she won’t move, isn’t happy, etc.? Health problems are the old go to, as has been previously stated. Of course that would really fly in the face of him talking about Clinton’s health, but he’s never worried about contradictions before.

Honestly, I’m not sure I could see him quitting, no matter how bad it got, because I keep thinking he’d be so wrapped up in his ego that he wouldn’t think he _could_ lose. But I don’t have a deep familiarity with the man or insight into his psyche. So I will bow to the opinion of those who know him better.

And, of course, this is all built on the situation getting worse for him, which is not at all guaranteed.

I think he would blame the “witch hunt” led by the media which made it impossible to help the little people the way he intended. Except he won’t use big words or complete sentences.

A nationwide, nearly universal revulsion. He goes out to do one of his love-ins and is greeted with derision and ridicule. Trouble being that the minds we need to change are not amenable to reason, and are buffered from facts.

Egotists hate to lose. I’d be the last to know, of course, but so I’ve been told. That might do it. Don’t know what else we have to hope for.

I don’t see Trump resigning either. Resigning = quitting, which in Trump’s mind is the worst possible weakness he could show. Admittedly it would be amusing if Trump announced he was resigning to spend more time with his family only to have Melania immediately file for divorce.

No, I get what you’re saying and I agree: if the people close to Trump encircle him, then he’ll probably have no choice but to resign. But what I’m saying is, don’t expect that to happen now or even in the immediate future. This guy became president with a bitterly divided plurality and while he might be losing some support among the few moderates or independents, his core base (who will have a lot to say about the mid-term elections) eat up the “we’re being treated unfairly” Trumpaganda.

I agree that Trump hates losing, but Trump also loves to fight and his campaign is tied to extremist constituencies that have invested a lot in him. The fact that he’s leaning toward Joe Lieberman as FBI director says it all: he’s (likely) picking the guy who has been a thorn in the side of democrats since 2003 (and oh yeah Lieberman’s law firm represents Trump). And again, the more the ante is raised, the more determined Trump (and his inner circle) will be to attack his enemies. The counter attack won’t be just one-liners in the media. What Trump and his allies will attempt is nothing short of upending the Constitution and the rule of law. I suspect that we’re heading toward the nation’s most serious crisis since the Civil War.

Trump would just go out and get another family to spend time with. He’s done it before.
