I know. They are going to get us through attrition, eventually.
But thank you for speaking out. I just want everyone reading this to understand that it makes a difference. It really does.
I’m so impressed with how engaged the grassroots has been.

Most whip counts show the “No” votes for Trumpcare 3.0 at 22. At 23, they don’t have enough votes, so calls really matter right now.
They are claiming they have the votes and it’s scheduled for a vote tomorrow.
This bill will result in 24 million people losing coverage, 800 billion in cuts to Medicaid, destabilizing Medicare, the end of pre-existing conditions protections, the end of essential health benefits, and huge increases in premiums for pre-Medicare older folks, increases in premiums for Medicare, plus real risk to keeping older folks and people with disabilities in their communities.
Call your representative. If you don’t know how to do that, send me a message and I’ll help you.
Is there a downside as well?
Remember when conservatives weren’t as up front about being evil? Good times.
Does it have the votes in the Senate? Does it require 60?
If passed, this will be a millstone around the neck of every Republican. They might start polishing up their resumes now because they’ll be looking for work in early 2019.
Yeah, but a lot of innocent people will be seriously harmed.
Regarding opposition to the bill, is there anything that people with Democratic representatives can do?
They are using reconciliation to get around a filibuster. It will still be a tough vote in the senate.
Brian
You’re assuming that Republican voters care about the reality of the situation. Many of them would vote for a baby-raping serial killer as long as he had an (R) after his name.
Speaking as someone not living in the USA: this is really the absolute best scenario - this passes, and spreads shit on every republican in congress. After all, it’s not like I have to care that millions of people are going to suffer from this, it will result in the sane and stable people retaking power.
Speaking as someone who isn’t a fucking sociopath: is there such a thing as a moral event horizon for a political party that doesn’t involve genocide?
I’m not sure they have them. Snowe and Collins might be tough for them to get. Senators don’t have the luxury of gerrymandered safe seats, they have to be palatable to more voters.
If you have a Democratic representative, still call and say thanks.
Look for rallies in your vicinity and go. Urge people you know to call. Get on social media (you can use tools like this https://trumpcaretoolkit.org/ to help you know what to do and who to tweet at.
Don’t count on moderate Republicans to save us.
Don’t count on the Senate to save us.
Don’t count on the Senate parliamentarian to save us.
They are using reconciliation, which means they need a majority only. It’s possible some of AHCA’s pieces can’t be passed via reconciliation, but the parliamentarian is a tool of the majority party.
And the Senate is a political body. If they can find some handy fig leaves, they will dress in them and vote for this thing. They are claiming they will completely revise it. Don’t count on them to do that if it’s not politically good for them. Don’t count on any member of Congress to abide by some nebulous idea of ethics or sense. They are political creatures. The way to win is to make sure it hurts when they do shit. But don’t count on anyone else to make them hurt. Don’t count on Republican voters. If you don’t want this to pass, and I sure as hell don’t, it’s up to you and me to stop it, not some sort of political karma.
This is a terrible bill. It will impact the health care coverage of every single person in the United States, and the greatest threat will be to sick people, people with disabilities, and older folks. It will have a devastating impact on the Medicaid program, which is the program that pays for most of the long-term care and long-term services and supports in this country. Rationing and wait lists. These are your death panels.
$830 billion from Medicaid.
Cuts to Medicare’s trust fund. And don’t think this will be the end of it for Medicare. They are trying to destabilize the trust fund, then turn around and say that Medicare needs an overhaul because see, it’s destabilized.
States will be able to let insurers charge whatever they want. They will be able to reinstate lifetime limits. They will be able to sell you a steering wheel of an insurance plan and claim it’s a car.
Tax cuts for really wealthy people. Something like $250,000/year for the richest.
You sound like the people who said it would be so great if Trump were nominated because it would destroy the Republican party.
Oh right, I forgot - this assumes that any significant portion of the wealthiest, most powerful country on earth would care about millions of people losing their health care.
If this were dystopian fantasy I would have considered it far-fetched. I mean, fuck, even in Idiocracy the morons have half an understanding of consequences when policies go wrong for them. Stupid, incomplete understanding, but they are, in fact, out for blood when they all lose their jobs.
Here’s a place you can look for rallies: Congressional Rally to Save Health Care | MoveOn.org
If you’re referring to Maine’s Olympia Snowe then it will be really tough vote to get as she’s been out of office for a few years now.
If you don’t know who is in the Senate, are you sure you understand the dynamics at play?
“Affordable access to good health care” Rep Garrett, Va., just now on MSNBC.
Crane
Oh shit, that’s right. My apologies. I’m so used to thinking of those two as a matching set and old habits die hard. Still, Collins is a tough sell.
