Trump’s statement says, “The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries previously identified by the Obama administration as sources of terror.” Is it so?

Answer: [only kinda sorta, at best.](http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/01/president-trumps-immigration-order-muslim-ban) Team Trump had to look past a bunch of lists from the Obama years that made more sense before digging up one that they were happy with.

My bold.

This is the crux of it. It’s called “civilization,” and we’re on the verge of losing it.

The points made at this site [http://learnfromeurope.org/](http://learnfromeurope.org/) show how it is done and how Trump and his cronies are doing it here. Now.

Underline mine: yes he was, because yes they were. Hitler rode to power on, among other things, a wave of xenophobia directed at refugees from Russia.

Hah! I was thinking the same thing.

I’m having trouble keeping up with the status of those detainees. Is anyone still being held in detention, or have they all been released? Are folks now being turned away at their country of origin, or are we sill having to detain folks in the US who were already traveling when the executive order was issued?

And correct me if I’m wrong here… The EO has two key parts:

1. No more refugees from the 7 countries. That is, folks coming here for the purpose of resettlement.

2. Increased scrutiny for folks with passports from those 7 countries. That is, folks can still travel here, but not as refugees and they will be subject to heighten security.

2a. Heightened security can apply to Green Card holders as well.

The Federal judges whose court orders haven’t been complied with can hold the appropriate Federal officials in contempt of court.

When lesser beings like you and me are found in contempt of court, and we’re not physically present in the courtroom, U.S. marshals get sent to our homes and places of work, and we get brought into court, and the judge tells us how long we’re gonna be in the pokey on account of being found in contempt of court.

With more exalted creatures such as Cabinet officials like Mr. Kelly, the secretary of DHS, it can be more of a challenge to get the U.S. marshals to bring them in.

At that point, things start breaking down.

When even conservatives (not the majority, but very influential ones) are complaining about this and the National Review had to still say that the part about the green card was madness and should be condemned. I think that then it is clear who are the ones who are taking the side of the “moran” in chief.

> **[Republicans Begin to Break With President Trump](https://time.com/4652966/donald-trump-refugee-ban-executive-order-republicans/)**
>
> A startlingly brief honeymoon for the new GOP President.

> [@](#):
>
> For the first time in his presidency, Donald Trump is facing significant criticism from Republican officials and conservative groups who are rattled by his ban on immigrants and refugees from Muslim-majority nations, questioning his domestic policy agenda and worrying about what steps the New York billionaire might take next in the name of nationalism.
>
> By Sunday evening, more than a dozen GOP members of Congress had spoken out against Trump’s executive order on immigration. Among them were an array of the party’s most influential figures. The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, said the United States should not implement a religious test. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio said the plan to strengthen vetting of refugees was itself not vetted. And the political and policy groups led by Charles and David Koch offered their first public criticism of Trump, whose candidacy the billionaire brothers found so unpalatable they sat out the 2016 election.
>
> The wave of criticism marks the end of a startlingly brief honeymoon period for a new President who has been in office for scarcely a week, and even set the White House on defense as it backtracked on the ban applying to green-card holders. And while much of the blowback was driven by Trump’s immigration orders, the controversial plans he has on the horizon suggest the rest of his term could be just as rocky.
>
> The emerging rifts come amid mass protests in cities around the U.S. against an executive order that would block millions of people from entering the United States. Legal permanent U.S. residents were detained at airports, refugees were trapped en route to the United States and judges from coast to coast stepped in to stop the unprecedented White House action. The chaos knocked the White House back on its heels and prompted Trump on Sunday night to release a defense of the policy.
>
> “This is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting,” Trump said in a statement released by the White House. “This is not about religion—this is about terror and keeping our country safe.”
>
> The sentiment did little to calm skittish conservatives, who have already grown tired of the theatrics and hysterics. From removing the Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Force from the National Security Council, to trolling news organizations on Twitter, the precedent-breaking new President was testing the patience of Republicans who had hoped he might change tactics and tone once he was in the Oval Office.

No. Federal law enforcement are effectively immune from arrest by state officials, and no branch of the federal government may direct state law enforcement personnel anyway.

A federal judge can - at least theoretically - direct U.S. Marshals to arrest other federal officials. I _highly_ doubt you’ll see that happen.

Of course, the opponents will overreact …it’s a wrong decision…it’s not a disastrous decision…I have said before, many of Trump opponents come across as repulsive due to their ego, anger etc. They make neutral people support Trump. He will win in 2020 as well if these repulsive opponents don’t improve.

How about people start by firstly condemning Islam, the root of all conflict?

I’m not sure either. The way the order was created and executed without much consultation or notice to anyone and the way it keeps changing on the whim of the president (yes, it includes green card holders … wait, no it doesn’t … wait again … it might) has created a mess that is very difficult to sort through. Some of the detainees were eventually let in, some were sent back, some aren’t allowed on, and some may still be in detention.

I think the [text of the executive order](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/us/politics/refugee-muslim-executive-order-trump.html) stops a refugee admittance program for all countries, bans Syrian refugees until Donald decides differently, and limits the entry of other refugees.

> [@John Mace](#):
>
> 1. Increased scrutiny for folks with passports from those 7 countries. That is, folks can still travel here, but not as refugees and they will be subject to heighten security.

I think that “I hereby proclaim the immigrant and non-immigrant into the United States of aliens from countries … [referred to another statute, but I think is the 7] … would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, and I suspend entry into the US, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, of such persons for 90 days” means that unless a person from those 7 countries meets the exceptions (diplomats, united nations, certain kinds of visas), they aren’t allowed in.

But I’ve never practiced immigration law, and it’s still kind of a mess legally, especially on a case by case basis, so take it worth a grain of salt.

From a recent Scott Adams’ post:

"The setup is that during the presidential campaign Trump’s critics accused him of being Hitler(ish) and they were sure other citizens would see it too, thus preventing this alleged monster from taking office.

They were wrong. The alleged monster took office.

Now you have literally millions of citizens in the United States who were either right about Trump being the next Hitler, and we will see that behavior emerge from him soon, or they are complete morons. That’s a trigger for cognitive dissonance. The science says these frightened folks will start interpreting all they see as Hitler behavior no matter how ridiculous it might seem to the objective observer. And sure enough, we are seeing that.
…
But lately I get the feeling that Trump’s critics have evolved from expecting Trump to be Hitler to preferring it. Obviously they don’t prefer it in a conscious way. But the alternative to Trump becoming Hitler is that they have to live out the rest of their lives as confirmed morons. No one wants to be a confirmed moron. And certainly not after announcing their Trump opinions in public and demonstrating in the streets. It would be a total embarrassment for the anti-Trumpers to learn that Trump is just trying to do a good job for America. It’s a threat to their egos. A big one."
