Well, I don’t think any candidate should end their campaign if there’s enough public support to keep that campaign going. We do live in a country where the people decide who gets elected, and I don’t think candidates should be stepping down for expressing sufficiently popular views that are nevertheless abhorrent. That’s our job, as the real bosses of this country. Trump should stand for election and be rejected.

That being said, there’s just nothing about him that I can imagine supporting. He sees no limits on his power, which is dangerous in a President.

But the Muslim database thing isn’t even the worst. The worst is saying that it was basically okay for that BLM activist to get beaten up.

what is so hard about the undocs doing the jobs Americans won’t? It’s so sad someone with Trump’s talent has to appeal to people who can’t see past simpleton rhetoric of “dey tooker jabbs.” Sure, the illegals might take janitorial, farm field hand, housemaid jobs, landscaping. but so few other occupations are being taken up by undocumented. They help our economy and if Trump has his way, I’d expect another recession.

Illegal immigration is easy: give amnesty to all non-convicts here and then build a wall? Is it sad we have to build a way next to our friend? Yes, but the wealth gap is such that any nation would do it, as immigrants will always be accused of taking jobs.

Trump doesn’t believe everything he says. He’s not a loon or stupid. He’s pandering to a subset of voters like every other politician. He’s just not promising a hand-out for everyone. He’s promising a wall.

Of course he’s a stupid loon. He was born with a platinum spoon up his ass and has garnered that into him being a buffoon on TV.

The GOP voter ought to be ashamed that this simpering racist twat is leading their pack.

What are these jobs Americans won’t take? Have the employers tried paying more money and providing better working conditions? Because that’s how it’s supposed to work: if you aren’t getting enough workers at the rate you’re paying, you increase the pay until you get enough workers.

> Just saw my first Trump bumper sticker today. I was almost tempted to follow the guy’s car and ask him at the next stop light, “What were you _thinking_?”

I’ve seen a few Carson bumper stickers lately. Same reaction.

A couple of recent non-Internet\* polls have Trump’s lead back up to 10 percentage points.

Fox News (11/16-19) has Trump 28, Carson 18, Rubio 14, Cruz 14, Bush etc. at 5 and below.

ABC/WaPo (11/16-19) has Trump 32, Carson 22, Rubio 11, Cruz 8, Bush 6, Fiorina 4, Huckabee, Kasich, Paul 3, Christie 2, Graham and Santorum 1 each.

The reason why I took the ABC/WaPo poll down is that there’s an eerie comparison with their poll from 10/15-18: Trump 32, Carson 22, Rubio 10, Cruz 6, Bush 7, Fiorina 5, Huckabee, Christie 3, Kasich, Paul 2, Graham and Pataki 1 each. Cruz has moved up by 2%, but nobody else’s support has changed by more than 1%. In a month. That’s extremely weird.

The press release header says “[GOP Race is Steady](http://www.langerresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/1173a22016Election.pdf)” but If you’d taken the same poll twice during the very same time interval, you wouldn’t usually see that much constancy. Strange.

At any rate, it’s clear that Trump’s support is moving back up again.

\*For whatever reason, Trump’s support is way higher in Internet polls than in non-Internet polls, and Carson’s is lower. In 10 weeks, we’ll start finding out which group of polls has created a better sampling frame of the GOP primary electorate.

That right there, that’s Marxism! I won’t say its _Islamic_ Marxism, because there’s nothing in there about a caliphate for the industrial proletariat. But close enough!

I heard Kasich ask, and I wonder the same thing, who the hell are they polling? Who is taking the surveys because it doesn’t seem so easy to dig up Trump supporters/defenders outside of his rallies. Even those, how many are there because they truly support Trump as opposed to hey, Trump’s in town let’s check it out?

Are they polling Republican primary voters?

His support has been consistent across many polls for the past 4 months, so I don’t question the integrity of the polling. My guess is his support is broad but not very deep. Some folks probably really identify with his message. Probably more folks aren’t paying that much attention and, if asked who they support, will think, “I don’t really know or care who the other guys are, I’ve heard of Trump, he’s pretty entertaining, I guess I’m for Trump.”

Just as bad.

I can imagine Trump supporting the identification of Muslims (and later there was talk about a registry), but I think it’s all part of the general Republican racist, xenophobic bluster, and not anything specifically Hitlerian on Trump’s part. Still evil, but not the kind of evil some of the news outlets are insinuating.

Of course it’s that kind of evil. It doesn’t matter if it’s not a “central plank.”

I’m stunned you could even try to spin this. It’s grounds for him to end his campaign as far as I’m concerned.

You’re right, though perhaps for the wrong reason: _ **Don’t underestimate the obnoxity and stupidity of the average Republican voter.** _

(This fact was lost on me most of my life, living in a liberalish enclave with mostly educated professionals for friends. When, in retirement, my social contacts broadened to include Texans I was stunned by the ease with which conversation turned to the hated Obama coming for their guns. And don’t forget that almost half of Republicans think Obama is a Muslim.)

The reason the billionaire won’t get the nomination is because the other billionaires don’t want him. And don’t forget that at the Convention about 10%(?) of the delegates are “superdelegates” more likely to vote for whomever the Koch Brothers pay them to rather than vote for “the people’s choice.”

And I still think there’s a fair chance that Trump’s run is nothing but a publicity stunt that got out of hand. He’ll want to find a graceful exit before there’s any real risk he’ll have to run in November.

I agree with almost all of this except I don’t think Trump’s supporters are your average Republican voters. From what I’ve seen and heard, Republicans don’t like him, which is why I’m wondering who they’re polling.

The polling is out of whack because most people don’t really give a shit yet. People around here, Dopers, we watch the news, we pay attention, so we have opinions. Most folks don’t, not really. What good is polling the political opinions of people who don’t vote? So, naturally, the more committed people are “over-represented”.

If Whack-a-doodle wins out over Shit-for-brains, or vice versa, doesn’t mean anything much until the question becomes Shit-for-brains or Hillary? The professional cynics that the Republicans employ know this, and tell them that. Now all they have to do is figure out a way so that doesn’t happen.

Meanwhile, Mittens waits by the phone…

I’m not trying to spin it, defend it, or justify it: I’m trying to contextualize it. The man is a racist demagogue (or acting as one, which amounts to the same thing), and I agree that failing to condemn the idea right out of the gate is a problem.

I just don’t like inaccuracies, like the idea that this is somehow Trump’s idea.
