A political party is defined not by the people standing on the podium, but by the people standing in front of it.

> You’re conflating two things.
>
> I did not claim that Republicans are racist. I don’t actually think that the average Republican is more racist than the average democrat. I do think that avowed racists are more comfortable with the Republican party agenda, but that’s hardly the same thing.
>
> I did not claim that identifying someone as “brown” makes them racist. Again, it’s arguable, because the very existence of the category is racist, but if I’m engaging in that discussion I have to accept the label too. Or we can be analytical and recognize that the social category exists, and talk about what it means.
>
> _You_ are claiming that Cruz is “brown.” _You_ are making statements about his race, which so far rest solely on his surname, which is Spanish. I am pointing out that Cruz, while he has a Spanish surname and is Latino, is “white” rather than “brown” by all reasonable measures. He’s only half Cuban, for one thing; his mother is an American of Irish and Italian descent. On his Cuban side, his paternal grandfather was from Spain. Rather illogically (but we’re talking about race), we don’t usually consider people from Spain Latino or even Hispanic. His grandmother was a Cuban of Spanish descent.
>
> So much of race is social. A light-skinned Cuban man with money who marries a white woman and lives in an English-speaking household is functionally white in America. A dark-skinned Cuban man with no money who marries a Dominican is functionally black in America. A habitually Spanish-speaking Cuban man with olive skin who marries a Mexican is functionally brown in America. I know this is confusing, but it’s the system we’ve got.

There isn’t much about this post that I would quarrel with, other than to point out that my use of the term “brown people” originally came from the left in order to accuse Republicans of bigotry and xenophobia.

And certainly I would agree that while most Republicans are no more racist than most Democrats, and that of those who are racist most gravitate to Republicanism, the constant drumbeat from the left is that Republicans as a whole are xenophobic and hate blacks, Hispanics and Muslims.

It’s been with both amusement and consternation that I’ve watched the left in this country defend Islam tooth and nail because only a small percentage of Muslims are extremists, while at the same time merrily painting conservatives and Christians with a very broad brush when it comes to things like abortion clinic bombings, domestic terrorism and overall racism and bigotry, even going so far as to exaggerate it - as in the case of Donald Trump and his alleged misogyny toward women which was based solely on insults he made toward one specific woman he was fueding with and who had attacked him first. Not only does his behavior toward Rosie O’Donnell not apply to his overall attitudes about women, which have been exemplary in terms of him placing them in powerful executive positions in his companies, but these misogynistic attitudes he is wrongly accused of harboring are also brought to bear on his supporters. (To your credit, however, you appear not to be one of those people and I commend you for acknowledging that the average Republican is likely no more racist than the average Democrat.)

Seems to me that “lack of diversity and closed-minded bigotry” along with a generous sprinkling of hate and paranoia is the central campaign message coming out of Trump, Cruz, and Rubio.

Trump I’ll give you, and Cruz preaches a divisive message as well, although more against ideology than against a particular race or religion. Rubio on the other hand has been an inclusive candidate.

It’s with continued amusement that so many conservative Dopers appear to get their “understanding” about “the left” from right-wing radio and similar sources, rather then, you know, the many actual liberal Dopers that would be happy to answer questions.

Yeah, his supporters have been going on about how Microsoft donated to Rubio and also made the software Iowa used. Why they would cheat to still come in third somehow escapes their comprehension.

Why do most threads on Islamic terrorism turn into Christian-bashing orgies?

Heck, Dick Dastardly cheated to come in _last_ place, often in situations where he would have won if he’d just kept racing along honestly.

You might nominate him but I doubt you’ll get any farther.

Any Cuban showing up in the US (not intercepted at sea) gets automatic residency after a year. No obstacle to citizenship. No immigration lawyers to pay. (Of course, Ted’s dad left before Castro rose to power–although he apparently had little problem getting in. But he didn’t bother to become a US citizen until 2005.) Immigrants from Mexico & points south have a\* much\* tougher time.

Many US citizens–whose ancestors moved north of That River many years ago–look far more Hispanic/Latino than pasty-faced Ted. And bigots like Sheriff Arpaio will treat them with suspicion (Do _you_ carry proof of citizenship every time you leave the house?)

Of course, few people need a reason to dislike My Jr Senator.

[USA today has the story; there was more than one tweet:

> [@Donald Trump](#):
>
> Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wrong and why he got far more votes than anticipated. Bad!

> [@Donald Trump](#):
>
> During primetime of the Iowa Caucus, Cruz put out a release that @RealBenCarson was quitting the race, and to caucus (or vote) for Cruz.

> [@Donald Trump](#):
>
> And finally, Cruz strongly told thousands of caucusgoers (voters) that Trump was strongly in favor of ObamaCare and “choice” - a total lie!

> [@Donald Trump](#):
>
> Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified.

It actually doesn’t allow edits, only deletions, but deleted tweets are still easily found, especially if you’re famous.
