It would take a whopping 4 senators defecting to the democratic caucus to flip the senate. 4. That there aren’t 4 senators disgusted enough by Trump and McConnell’s behavior to do that is testament to how utterly fucked we all are.

> ROSEBURG, OR—Noting the wide variety of nonperishable items lining the shelves, furloughed government employee Sheena Enders, 38, confirmed Wednesday she was using some of the time off from her job with the U.S. Census Bureau to visit the local food pantry she had heard so much about. “I’ve driven past this place before, but this is the first time I’ve ever had the chance to try it,” said Enders, who has yet to receive a paycheck in 2019, adding that with her office closed she would have plenty of time to wait if there was a line to get in. “My friends from work keep suggesting I check it out. I guess some of them went there over the holidays. They warned me there might be a bit of a wait, but said there’s a good selection of items to choose from—pasta, canned soup, rice—even stuff I’ve never tried before, like powdered milk. I hope it lives up to the hype.” At press time, sources reported the gas to Enders’ apartment had been cut off and she had decided to treat herself to a day at the local emergency warming center.

;)😃

The humor in that comes from the slight exaggeration of circumstances and perspective. The tragedy in that comes from the fact that it’s only a slight exaggeration of reality.

Four to pass the measure, but another 7 would be needed to override the veto. Your sentiment still stands, though.

That’s an interesting point. How much does China spend on wall maintenance for their tourist attraction?

For three weeks. I’m trying to imagine Trump calling for another shutdown in three weeks, and how McConnell would feel about backing his play that time.

McConnell’s willingness to fuck over the country for partisan gain has surprised me before, but even so I have a hard time seeing him playing ball with the president on another go-round.

Apparently, in regards to the government shutdown, he told fellow Republicans, [“There’s no education in the second kick of a mule.”](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/congress-mcconnell-no-need-second-mule-kick-flna8C11417530)

Only he said that in 2013, in regard to the shutdown over ObamaCare.

Surely he’d not see much education in the mule’s fifth kick. Right?

Right?

Ha! I get your point, but baggage handlers aren’t federal employees, and the FAA wouldn’t have instituted formal traffic-management programs because an airline was having a labor dispute.

Of course, air traffic controllers always get blamed for delays. If you’re ever on a plane and the pilot gets on the intercom and tells you there’s an “ATC delay,” he’s probably not telling you the truth. I’ve heard of pilots blaming ATC when they’ve been delayed by mechanical issues, or a mixup with the ground crew, or some other fault of the airline or the airport, not air traffic control. It’s funny to us, kinda.

If it comes to that, and it comes back to the senate to override the veto, and already done so in the house, then the shutdown fall squarely on the republican senators that vote against it. They have no cover or even fig leaf to hide behind.

> Current rules for providing air traffic services are “first come, first served.” ATC doesn’t prioritize based on aircraft size, or whether you’re an airliner opposed to a Cessna. Changing that would be a radical and massive upheaval in how ATC services are provided (and, as a matter of fact, one of the fears many have if the air traffic system is contracted out or privatized, rather than being a federally provided system as it is now).

That’s what prompted my thought on that, actually. A friend suggested that the airlines hire ATC and run it themselves.

I see this as a very suboptimal solution, even if necessary, and largely due to the fact that it would completely screw anyone that is not a major airline.

That they take all comers first come first served is the current rules, and they are the rules that I would agree should stick around. My concern is that those rules get changed due to “necessity”.

Maybe the airlines start charging for the service, and you start having to pay an ATC fee when you file your flight plan. That would be the _least_ disruptive way I can think of that playing out.

When you consider the fact that America was pretty great to begin with, what he’s doing for the first term is turning America into a dystopian hellscape.

I’d say he’s ahead of schedule on that one.

“National Emergency” doesn’t get him his wall, though.

The emergency itself will be challenged in courts, taking years.

Presuming it goes in Individual-1’s favor, then property rights fights will take years as well. Also, efforts to build the wall on national park land will be challenged, as well as a whole host of other legal challenges which will happen.

The challenges will take longer than Individual-1 has in the WH, even if Putin wins him another election.

National Emergency = No Wall. Guarantee it.
