I think Peter David retconned Byrne’s Hulk into…hee…a comic book in _Captain Marvel_ #2.

Rick Jones: “Skrulls? Bwahahahahahah! Where do they come up with this stuff?”

Meanwhile, I notice that our regularly-scheduled Cap has

…unmasked himself on national television in _Captain America_ #3. Oh, like THAT hasn’t been done lately.

Good heavens. It really is “anything goes” now.

I was thinking a very similar thing as Polish Sausage.

I imagined that the US had gotten wind of the Nazi super soldier project and had begun work on their own. These early tests on the black soldiers were knowingly doomed to failure. But was similar to the “race for the bomb”. The project got a boost when the head of the German program ‘defected’ to the US.
