There is a similar story about Fiorello LaGuardia having to host and protect high-ranking Nazi visitors in the late 1930s. Following in TR’s footsteps, he [appointed a squad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Finkelstein) of tall, strapping, broad-chested, Jewish officers for the duty.

Yeah, at first I thought it was a jab, but then … 3 years not 9 months, and it’s true. I realized that the intent was probably an earnest observation of how much things have changed since then.

I suppose in 1958-9 there could have been a Captain who was Jewish commanding a Navy Base on the gulf coast. Although the Navy probably had black commissioned officers then, there weren’t many of them and I doubt there’d be 4 black Ensigns and LtJgs stationed at that unit. And why the hell does a 16 year old girl need 4 dates to a dance?

And let’s face it, the last thing a healthy 22-24 year old male wants to do is attend an incredibly chaperoned non-drinking affair with some conceited 16 year old jailbait.
