AKA: Wine Spodiodi
Wine Spodiodi is described by Jack Kerouac in his famous novel On the Road once stumbled upon a San Francisco bar. “Dean and I had ended up with a colored guy called Walter who ordered drinks at the bar and had them lined up and said, “Wine-spodiodi!” which was a shot of port wine, a shot of whisky, and a shot of port wine, “Nice sweet jacket for all that bad whisky!” he yelled.” A wine spodiodie (also spelled Spodiodi) was initially a shot that consisted of a layer of port wine on the bottom, then an additional layer of (cheap) bourbon, finished on the top by another layer of the port. A more simple version is made by just combining port and bourbon in a glass.
Burgundy wine with spaghetti and meatballs with marinara sauce is a great combo!
If you like hard cider, you might like chardonnay, just make sure its well chilled (like you will be after you drink it - lol). The problem is good chardonnay tends to cost more and bad chardonnay has a sour/ sulphur taste (that gives me an instant headache).
I like California chardonnay but don’t buy it because I think it’s way to expensive.
Carneros Chardonnay Tasting
Aromas of briny mineral, apple and apricot open to flavors with depth and traction. Floral lemon and apple aromas lead to complex, opulent flavors. Supple and creamy with graceful spice and Asian pear flavors. Great focus and length with aromas of spicy lees, mineral and spice.
Perhaps a cultural difference, but the idea of its being usually a dessert wine which would also complement Stilton is quite surprising. In the UK it’s so known as an accompaniment to Stilton that “portandstilton” is almost a single word! You can buy gift packs of Port and blue cheese around Christmas. Fancy meals might sometimes involve a port and Stilton gravy.
Aged Tawny is a good shout, you’re right, and not only Taylor’s (although that is my go-to), but there are lots of port styles which would suit the sweet tooth.
Worth warning the uninitiated as to what port actually is though! It seems only fair. Port is fortified wine - wine with spirit added - so it’s more strongly alcoholic than wine, but its sweetness can make it deceptively quaffable.
