Can’t remember the title of the book I am thinking of, and searching Google doesn’t bring anything up. Only details I can sort of remember is that there was a sick boy, maybe going blind, something about selling oranges or citrus, English village or small city setting circa early 1900’s, perhaps a black bird. Some of these details may be off, but this is all I have. Any ideas?

Roughly what year do you think you read this book?

Give this website a try and go from there. The second link, to Loganberry Books, is indeed the best source for this.

Between 1986 and 1989? That puts me at 3-6 years old at the time, so my memory could be fuzzy.
