Of course this would be moot if there were a single universal US Citizen/Legal resident ID document issued free of charge, but noooooo, we can’t have that.

A drivers license in my state is $25.75 (for a new license you have to get a temporary permit first, which costs about the same). A state ID is $8.50.

Plus indirectly, if you have to provide other identity corroboration such as birth certificate and don’t have a current one in hand, the fee for that.

Which can be pricy. A CA birth certificate is something like $45 online, and you have to pay for a notary to notarized the forms.
