Tsunami travelling across the Pacific

There was also a 7+ 'quake in Japan last night, about 10 hours befor the one in Chile.

Good luck to you Epic, and everyone else on the Islands. Scary stuff.

So… the Pacific has just turned into a giant bathtub with monster sloshes?

I really, really hope the death toll on this is under 6 digits, but clearly this goes far beyond either Santiago or Chile

Mighty astute of you to notice that.

So, the tsunami should be hitting Hawai’i now. Hope it’s not too bad…

Actually not for another five hours. 11:18 Hawaiian time; 4:18 Eastern time.

Do we have any Chilean Dopers?

Lovely, more natural disasters.

I remember watching a documentary about a Tsunami in Hawaii, in Hilo, I don’t recal when, but they had a Tsunami warning and it had the opposite effect. Everyone ran down to the beach to see the Tsunami. And then it didn’t come on time, so people ignored it and then it came later and killed a bunch of people

They are saying the wave to hit Hilo, HI could be 8 feet.

That worries me, then I remembered they were surfing 40 foot waves back in December. I have not heard from my son (in the Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor) but the best guess is that he is on his ship going out to sea to ride it out.

CNN had the death toll at 122 last I looked, and expected to rise.

At least with tsunamis, you have a chance of getting a warning. Get high, coastal Dopers! (Uh, geographically - what you do while you’re up there is your own business. )

luck to you all.

The warning for Australia suggests that waves could strike along the NSW coast from 0845 Sunday morning (ie in just over three hours’ time), and people are being warned to stay away from beaches.

Probably, but power is out in a lot of places in Chile right now, and even if it’s not they might well have more pressing concerns at the moment. I’m sure they’ll check in over the next few days.

I think, after the video from the Boxing Day Tsunami, people take the warnings to stay away from the beach in these circumstances a lot more seriously.

I have just learned that a Tusnami wave is not a “surfable” wave, so the comparison of surfing waves and Tsunami waves is not true.

Thank goodness for the internet-I can watch the TV news in Hawaii!!

Hopefully everyone will get out harms way. This tsunami should be well documented considering the considerable advanced warning.

How about New Zealand? From what I am seeing on maps, they should be the first heavily populated place that is affected. That said I have no idea what the topography of the east coast of New Zealand is like. I have a step brother who lives in New Zealand, but I have no idea where he is at on the island.

Go to high ground everyone.

Nit: geologists do not use the Richter scale any more, although the press sometimes still says “Richter” erroneously. They use the moment magnitude scale, which has values similar to the Richter scale except at very high values.

I’m watching some video from the Hawaiian news, and a geophysicist said Alaska will be hit first, and then Hawaii. How does that work?

I live in Buenos Aires, there are reports of people who felt the earthquake, I slept like a baby, did not feel anything.
